ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Asia Pacific Regional Director is a senior manager providing leadership for the design and implementation of programs and strategic actions for the conservation priorities in the Asia Pacific Region.  S/he ensures that regional and operating unit strategies and activities reflect The Nature Conservancy’s (TNC) Conservation Framework and valuesand is ultimately responsible and accountable for the programs, partnerships and conservation results throughout the region.  S/he represents the Region broadly to Conservancy senior management, the Board of Directors and volunteer leadership, major private donors, key government stakeholders, and NGO partners. S/he fundraises with public and private donors and ensures that sufficient resources are available to accomplish the regional program’s objectives.  As a member of the Conservancy’s Conservation Leadership Team, the Regional Director takes a leadership role in representing and supporting TNC’s organizational initiatives.  S/he is responsible for allocating financial and human resources across the region to best meet the conservation and programmatic challenges of the region.  The Regional Director manages the Region’s Division Directors and provides managerial oversight for all regional administration, ensuring adherence to legal requirements and Conservancy policies and procedures.

This position reports to the Chief Conservation Officer, based in the U.S.  It is strongly preferred that the location of the position be in Hong Kong.  The position must be located in-region, in a country where the Conservancy is legally registered and has an existing office.  The Regional Director will oversee three Divisions within the Asia Pacific Region: Australia, Asia Pacific (Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Micronesia, Indonesia and Mongolia), and Greater China.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in business, law, natural resource management or other relevant field and 5+ years’ experience in international conservation field, or equivalent.
  • Management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth in a complex, multi-cultural environment.
  • Experience in fundraising, particularly in identifying donor prospects and donor cultivation.
  • Experience in partnership development (corporations, community leaders, governments, non-profit organizations, etc.) in multiple countries; experience with high-level conservation contacts.
  • Fluency in English and in a predominant language of the Region

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS
  • Graduate degree in business, law, natural resource management or other relevant field and 5+ years’ experience in international conservation field, or equivalent.
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth in a complex, multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent communications in English and language(s) of the Region.
  • High energy, forward thinking, creative individual with high ethical standards.  Outstanding leadership and visionary qualities and able to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization.
  • Working knowledge of politics, society and environmental community of the countries of the geographic region.  Excellent contacts throughout the region.
  • Practices global literacy by keeping abreast of and promoting TNC’s global agenda.
  • Experience dealing with challenges, identifying important issues and conceiving and implementing strategic initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Willingness to travel 30-45% of time, often to remote locations.  Travel will be within the Region, to the U.S., and may involve travel to other countries as necessary.  The Nature Conservancy works in 30+ countries around the world and organizational meetings are held in different countries.
  • Willingness to work evening and weekend hours as necessary.
  • Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain.  Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
