ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Grassland Restoration Intern will travel throughout the Prairie Forest Border Ecoregion in central and southeast Minnesota participating in preserve management activities which may include some or all of the following functions: 
  • Remove exotic species and/or species monitoring (including the  use of herbicides)
  • Prescribed burn preparation, implementation, and post-fire monitoring
  • Brush and tree removal
  • Seed harvest and planting
  • Monitoring 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • One year experience, coursework or other training in wildlife, ecology, range management or other related field.
  • Experience managing and prioritizing tasks.
  • Experience performing administrative duties emphasizing detail-oriented and numerical tasks.
  • Experience performing physical work 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • One year experience, coursework or other training in wildlife, ecology, or other related field.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Ability to identify flora and fauna and follow established monitoring protocol once trained. 
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people in potentially fatigued conditions and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Follow instructions closely and work independently of supervisors.
  • Manage time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.
  • Ability to operate various types of tools and equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g. Truck, ATV, pumps, mower, hand tools, GPS units, etc) once trained
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
  • Willingness to live and work in an isolated rural environment and share living quarters.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
 

This is an excellent opportunity to understand the value of a functioning native prairie.  The work is hard but fun.  The people who will work with the interns are dedicated to prairie protection, enhancement and restoration and will help the interns appreciate this outstanding resource.  The skills developed on this job can be applied to restoration of other habitat types. 

This job travels around the Central and Southeastern parts of Minnesota so the interns will see several preserves ranging from Tallgrass Prairies to Savannas to Sand Prairies.  They will learn about a variety of plant communities, and the animals and birds that live there.  They will also learn about the geography and culture of Minnesota. 

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure or adverse conditions, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
  • Formulate ideas and communicate clearly with others, both orally and in written form.
  • Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff, and others, to provide and obtain needed information.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The Grassland Restoration Intern may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions may:
  • require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
