The Nature Conservancy will employ two prairie managers to work from partner offices (Minnesota Department of Natural Resources or US Fish & Wildlife Service).  The budget will provide for vehicles, office, field equipment, and fencing supplies to allow implementation of accelerated grassland management on Wildlife Management Areas, Waterfowl Production Areas, and select protected private lands.  Duties will include:
  • Organize and convene landscape coordinating committee to foster program coordination among public conservation partners, develop and implement cooperative grazing program, and develop/implement land management plan(s).
  • Coordinate with Conservation Corps Minnesota crews, private contractors, and public entities to implement prescribed fire and other land management activities on public and selected private lands.
  • Assess success of grazing systems and restoration projects in meeting objectives as determined by Conservancy science staff; revise practices as needed.
  • Establish contact with landowners who have native prairie or other high quality grasslands, wetlands or other habitats.
  • Promote prairie conservation practices to landowners including possible sale for State, Federal and Private conservation programs, or implementation of rotational grazing and prescribed fire.
  • Work with local businesses to ramp up capability to produce local ecotype seed and planting/management capacity.
  • Secure additional funding and work with other partners to identify and direct funds for program purposes.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Prairie Recovery Specialist (PRS) works closely with public agency partners to develop, manage and advance conservation programs, plans and methods for small-scale ecoregions.  The PRS provides technical leadership and support to the Minnesota Chapter.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Plans and directs grassland management programs and stewardship in cooperation with partners
  • Addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species
  • Fosters cross-site learning among conservation community
  • Supplies ecoregional planning teams with information for site portfolios
  • Develops and implements conservation strategies
  • Coordinates community support
  • Implements  preserve management philosophy and best practices
  • Works with local agricultural producers to implement conservation grazing systems in cooperation with various partners
  • Maintain and enhance invasive species management techniques
  • Financial responsibility includes working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development.
  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements

As part of the incumbent’s ongoing professional development, he/she will be responsible for keeping abreast of new conservation techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional skills and/or credentials with particular emphasis on conservation grazing, burning, invasive species control, and prairie restoration.  In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional grassland conservation community and in the local community where the Conservancy works.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, Web browsers, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
  • Experience performing physical work.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years experience in natural resource management or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities
  • Ability to communicate and work closely with conservation partners
  • Experience working with media and influential officials, especially governmental, to improve Conservancy programs’ outcomes
  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
  • Experience negotiating and providing oversight for complex agreements with vendors and partners
  • Demonstrated experience communicating effectively with the public and/or media
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
  • Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers and GIS). 
  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The Prairie Recovery Specialist may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings

This is a regular position with an employment duration of two years.
