POSITION SUMMARY

As part of an overall strategy to address the most pressing environmental challenges of today, this important and exciting role calls for a talented and versatile professional with extensive experience using media relations to advance conservation, marketing, policy, fundraising and other important business objectives.

The Media Relations Manager will play the lead role in developingintegrated media campaigns to raise The Nature Conservancy’s visibility in target California markets while building fruitful relationships with regional, state and national journalists, bloggers and opinion writers.

The Media Relations Manager reports to the MRC Director in San Francisco, CA.   The position does not directly manage staff, but will work across
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Work with the MRC Director, state/regional and country program directors and other Conservancy media relations managers to develop and implement media strategies that maximize the Conservancy’s presence in target markets.   
  • Assist in meeting conservation and policy objectives and marketing plan outcomes by developing and conduct messaging, media relations and other outreach strategies and tactics to target stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain strong media contacts.  Initiate story placement and respond to media inquiries.
  • Develop and implement crisis communications plans when necessary.
  • Research, write and distribute wide variety of media materials, such as Op-eds, news releases, fact sheets and talking points.
  • Advise program staff how strategic communications and other marketing tactics can help advance  conservation and policy objectives and manage reputational risk. 
  • Project manage all aspects of key media announcements including developing plans, coordinating with other TNC staff and partners, facilitating broader marketing promotions as appropriate.
  • Provide media training and consultation.
  • Serve as spokesperson where appropriate
  • Participate in Conservancy networks to enhance knowledge and skills and advance program goals.
  • Coordinate with other media and marketing staff in other chapters and the World Office to identify opportunities for national trend articles and features.

  • BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
    • Bachelor’s degree in English, Marketing or related field and a minimum of 5 years related experience or equivalent experience. 
    • Experience writing, editing, proofreading, and with oral communications.
    • Experience working with journalists across all media channels; print, digital and broadcast.
    • Experience in client and project management.
    • Experience with all MS Office suites functions.
