OFFICE LOCATION Wilmington, Delaware (DE) ABOUT US The Nature Conservancy is the world’s leading conservation organization, working in all 50 states and more than 33 countries. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive. TNC DEPARTMENT OR PROGRAM SPECIFIC Formed in 1994, the Delaware Chapter of The Nature Conservancy has a solid history of conservation achievement in protecting land, ecological restoration, securing public conservation funding, creating innovative partnerships, and maintaining ongoing land management commitments. Through these efforts the Chapter has worked with partners to protect more than 30,000 acres, maintains 6 local nature preserves, and has a membership of about 3,100 individuals. It has a volunteer Board of Trustees, a staff of 5, and total chapter expenditures of $1.09 million in FY10 (which included an operating budget of $790,000). S(he) will have responsibility to support our global conservation work and priority U.S. conservation strategies, and advance strategies and support for three regional whole system projects: Chesapeake Bay, Delaware River and Bay, and the Mid-Atlantic Seascape. Delaware River and Bay The Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania chapters are working to conserve the Delaware River and Bay. The river is one of the longest free flowing rivers in the eastern U.S. stretching more than 400 miles from its source in the Catskill Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. The Delaware is a river of tremendous biological, economic and cultural significance. Nearly 20 million people along the East Coast rely on its water for drinking and industrial purposes. Chesapeake Bay The Chesapeake Bay watershed spans 64,000 square miles comprising portions of Delaware, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. Working with partners, TNC has protected more than 164,000 acres in the region and is currently focusing on efforts to restore native oyster populations and improve water quality. The Delaware Chapter focuses its efforts on the Nanticoke River, a major tributary of the bay. Mid-Atlantic Seascape The Mid-Atlantic Seascape extends from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, up to the Sandy Hook area of New Jersey and offshore 40 to 60 miles to the continental shelf. The Nature Conservancy is working with partners to improve ocean management practices through improved marine spatial planning tools, strengthening of regional ocean governance mechanisms, fishery policy, migratory species conservation, and marine/estuarine habitat restoration. Building on the success of TNC's current worldwide $1.25 billion campaign, the largest private conservation campaign ever undertaken, the Delaware Chapter enjoys a strong foundation on which to support its conservation mission. Going forward, the focus is to grow revenues, both to underpin vigorous and worthwhile programs in the state, as well as to enhance support for significant and valuable projects globally. The Delaware Chapter is working to increase support for conservation around the world by raising funds for the Conservancy’s global priorities as well as providing staff and trustee expertise. TNC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Nature Conservancy seeks a proven, dynamic leader to direct the Delaware Chapter to new heights in conservation achievement in Delaware, the Eastern United States, and the World as part of TNC’s Management Team, fulfilling the Conservancy’s global priorities.
