Founded over 20 years ago, the Nanticoke Watershed Alliance (NWA) fosters partnerships and progress in conserving the natural, cultural, and recreational resources of the Nanticoke River watershed through dialogue, collaborative outreach, and education. Among the most respected watershed organizations in the region, the NWA leverages robust and powerful relationships with business and industry, academic institutions, government, non-profit groups, and a dedicated corps of volunteers to achieve its mission. The Executive Director (ED) oversees a $200,000 budget, three full-time staff and seasonal interns, and an office located near the banks of the Nanticoke River in Vienna, Maryland. NWA’s flagship programs are considered highly effective and help maintain the Nanticoke as one of the healthiest river systems in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Core programs

  • Nanticoke Creekwatchers: The first (and one of only two) citizen water monitoring programs in the Chesapeake watershed endorsed by the USEPA for its methodology.
  • Watershed Management Planning: An ambitious restoration plan based in the science of Green Infrastructure and informed by in-depth stakeholder input that comprehensively guides activities in 5 Maryland and Delaware counties.
  • Flexible Buffers: A model for boosting the establishment of grass buffers along agricultural ditches using innovative cost-sharing currently unavailable through existing programs. Widely popular with farmers, over 15 miles of buffers were planted in the program’s first year.
  • Captain John Smith National Water Trail Management: The NWA is the authority for water trail interpretation in the Maryland portion of the Nanticoke River.
