ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Fire and Restoration Crew members must be highly motivated team players, skilled at good followership while also able to demonstrate sound leadership when appropriate.  Essential characteristics of members of this crew include: commitment to high reliability, flexibility, good will, and willingness to share knowledge while remaining teachable.  Enthusiasm for working positively with a wide variety of partners is indispensible.

The Fire and Restoration Crew members will conduct field work on both Conservancy and partner properties in Southeastern Massachusetts (Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands), and potentially throughout the Northeastern U.S. There may also be office duties at TNC field stations in Plymouth and on Martha’s Vineyard. Field duties may include conducting safe wildland fire operations, contributing to management unit planning and mapping, fire break clearing, fire equipment maintenance and repair, participation in fuel reduction and FIREWISE projects, vegetation and rare species monitoring, and fuel-load sampling. Crew members should expect to work with hand tools, pumps, chainsaws, type six, type seven, and type three engines, GPS devices, digital cameras, and word processing and spreadsheet software.  The crew may be required to work on some weekends.  Crew members must be willing to perform a wide variety of tasks and remain flexible with short-notice scheduling adjustments.

DUTIES
  • Assist with the management of fire adapted communities, including Pitch Pine-Scrub Oak Barrens, Scrub Oak Thickets, Oak Woodlands and Savannahs, Heathlands, and Grasslands, using both prescribed fire and mechanical treatments.
  • When interacting with the public and partners, communicate professionally about TNC’s mission, fire ecology, wildfire hazards, and FIREWISE.
  • Work with TNC and partner stewardship staff and volunteers to perform preserve maintenance.
  • Perform administrative duties related to fire and restoration activities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be S-130\190 certified and pass the NWCG arduous level work capacity test. Please indicate this in your online application.
  • Experience using a map and compass.
  • Experience operating chainsaws and brush cutters; experience operating ATVs/UTVs (certified training preferred), experience operating small tractors preferred.
  • Experience performing difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather.  Ability to complete a standardized 3-mile fitness test carrying a 45-pound pack while walking on flat terrain in less than 45 minutes.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and learning, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, to balance several tasks at once, and get along with a wide variety of people.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in person and in writing; some experience with computers, word processing preferred.
  • Must be S-130\190 certified and pass the NWCG arduous level work capacity test.
  • Ability and willingness to perform difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather. Excellent physical conditioning and the ability to complete a standardized 3-mile fitness test carrying a 45-pound pack while walking on flat terrain in less than 45 minutes.
  • Ability and willingness to work during the week and on weekends, and to travel frequently and on short notice.  Possible travel to Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Pennsylvania.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

This is a per diem position. Applicants must be available to work limited hours on an ad hoc basis on short notice.
