ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Fire and Restoration Crew members must be highly motivated team players, skilled at good followership while also able to demonstrate sound leadership when appropriate. Essential characteristics of members of this crew include: commitment to high reliability, flexibility, good will, and willingness to share knowledge while remaining teachable. Enthusiasm for working positively with a wide variety of partners is indispensible.

The Fire and Restoration Crew members will conduct field work on both Conservancy and partner properties in Southeastern Massachusetts (Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands), and potentially throughout the Northeastern U.S. There will also be office duties at TNC field stations in Plymouth and on Martha’s Vineyard. Duties may include conducting safe wildland fire operations, contributing to management unit planning and mapping, fire break clearing, fire equipment maintenance and repair, participation in fuel reduction and FIREWISE projects, vegetation and rare species monitoring, invasive species removal, and fuel-load sampling. Crew members should expect to work with hand tools, pumps, chainsaws and pole saws, type six, type seven, and type three engines, tractors, skid-steers, GPS devices, digital cameras, and word processing and spreadsheet software. The crew will be required to work on some weekends. Crew members must be willing to perform a wide variety of tasks and remain flexible with short-notice scheduling adjustments. This is a short-term position expected to begin in late February and end in late June. Length of hiring term may be extended contingent upon funding availability and staff performance

DUTIES:
  • Crew members may work across New England, often performing weather dependent missions in coordination with numerous partners. Therefore, crew members must be flexible, with the ability and willingness to work some weekends, and to travel frequently with short notice for extended periods.
  • Assist with the management of fire adapted communities, including Pitch Pine-Scrub Oak Barrens, Scrub Oak Thickets, Oak Woodlands and Savannahs, Heathlands and Grasslands, using both prescribed fire and mechanical treatments.
  • Assist with monitoring rare plant and animal species, and fuel load sampling.
  • When interacting with the public and partners, communicate professionally about TNC’s mission, fire ecology, wildfire hazards, and FIREWISE.
  • Work with TNC and partner stewardship staff and volunteers to perform preserve maintenance.
  • Perform administrative duties related to fire and restoration activities.


BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 
  • Certified completion of S-130\190, L-180 and I-100 NWCG courses.
  • High school diploma and six months related experience.
  • Experience using maps, GPS, and aerial photos. 
  • Experience towing trailers.
  • Experience operating chainsaws, poles saws and brush cutters; experience operating ATVs/UTVs (certified training preferred); experience operating small tractors and skid steers preferred.
  • Experience performing difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather. 

PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and learning, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, to balance several tasks at once, and get along with a wide variety of people.
  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience communicating effectively in person and in writing; some experience with computers, word processing required.
  • Experience performing difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather.  Ability to complete the NWCG arduous fitness test (walk 3 miles while carrying a 45-pound pack on flat terrain in less than 45 minutes).
  • Experience operating ATVs/UTVs (certified training preferred); experience operating small tractors and skid steers preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and travel frequently and on short notice for extended periods to various locations, potentially including Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
SALARY INFORMATION

$12-16 hourly depending on experience. Housing provided.
