The Director of Operations is responsible for working closely with and providing strategic, substantive, and operational support to the Executive Vice President and North America Managing Director.   Specifically, the Director of Operations helps the Managing Director manage an innovative, high-return strategic agenda and an integrated platform of services for operations.  The conservation functions include:  line operations, strategy and policy.  The administrative functions include: compliance, finance, external affairs, human resources, internal communications, marketing/membership/philanthropy, and technology & information systems.   The Director of Operations is the lead staffer for the North America Region’s Management Team. The Director of Operations must maintain confidentiality of privileged information and requires the highest level of personal integrity and professional judgment as s/he is a key advisor to the Managing Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Director of Operations provides support in four key areas:  (1) project management for the highest priority management initiatives launched by the North America Region;  (2) strategic and organizational planning including ensuring appropriate analytical expertise for decision-making and priority-setting; (3) internal marketing, constituency building and advocacy with staff within and beyond the North America Region; (4) organizational integration. The Director of Operations represents the North America Region in select internal and external interactions.  S/he leads major recruitments and, as needed, supervises high-level consultants and contractors. S/he supervises the North America Region’s Executive Assistant, Operations Administrator and may supervise other administrative staff.

The Director of Operations prioritizes activities, streamlines workflow and communications, and oversees all major projects in the purview of the North America Region. S/he oversees all operations of the Region including creation of and adherence to policies and procedures, and management of a comprehensive annual budget for programs directly in the purview of the Managing Director.  S/he collaborates with key staff from TNC’s Worldwide Office and other conservation regions to facilitate management processes; strengthen internal communications and team dynamics within the Region, organize and lead task forces and working groups, and manage special projects.

The Director of Operations reports to the North America Managing Director and must be willing to manage the Strategic, Operational, Project Management, Governance and Internal Communication functions of the Region.  S/he must be willing to take on additional management responsibilities as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the managing director in developing goals and priorities for the North America Region; ensure a unified understanding of and progress toward those goals and priorities by the Region’s senior leadership team and across the organization.
  • Develop strategy and manage teams to advance organization-wide and regional priorities while building alignment and support.
  • Oversee teams of professionals providing executive leadership with information and analysis needed to support key decisions.  Lead project management and tracking for the Managing Director. Identify, recruit and manage staff to implement special projects.  Provide project review and oversight on behalf of the Region.
  • Strategize with the Managing Director and other senior officers on institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution; ensure implementation plans are effectively communicated and managed.
  • Grow and maintain a robust and consistent internal communications program.
  • Working with the Managing Director and senior team, strategize, develop and implement an ongoing effort to foster an environment of creativity, opportunity and growth for new and existing Regional staff; facilitate and grow the Region’s ability to have staff of all functions participate in exchange and learning opportunities worldwide; promote and exemplify the One Conservancy ethic.
  • Anticipate and identify issues for discussion at key management meetings; identify appropriate meeting participants; work with appropriate departments to prepare and/or manage the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as necessary.
  • Lead, launch and/or coordinate special projects on behalf of the Region, frequently involving Senior Managers from across the organization; represent the director in selected internal and external interactions not directly handled by the director.  Manage highest priority projects for the region.
  • As needed, serve as the Managing Director’s primary strategic liaison with senior staff of other organizations; coordinate communication.
  • Work closely to set priorities for the Managing Director’s presence at internally and externally focused events and meetings; provide strategic consultation to the Managing Director and hosting staff on planning and execution of development trips, events, and appointments.
  • Meet individually as needed or as directed by the Managing Director with members of the Regional Management Team (and others, as directed) to monitor progress toward and attainment of assigned goals and activities.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Five years of experience in one, or a combination of, the major divisions of The Nature Conservancy or within a similarly complex distributed, decentralized organization.
  • Leadership ability, discretion and excellent judgment.
  • Exceptional analytic and creative skills.  Ability to think strategically. Ability to synthesize complex information.  Ability to apply research.  Flexibility.
  • Ability to manage project teams of peers as well as teams of senior managers and others in high-level management positions.
  • Must be able to react to time-sensitive matters as well as manage complex, longer-term initiatives.
  • Ability to understand financial aspects of planning of annual budgets.
  • Ability to manage large workload, with attention to setting priorities, task planning, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Proven ability to succeed through positive influence and persuasion.
  • Excellent written, spoken and presentation communications skills.
  • Excellent mediation and negotiation skills.
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours when necessary.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.  Graduate degree or MBA strongly preferred.

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 years related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects, setting realistic deadlines, and managing timelines. 
  • Experience managing a multi-disciplinary team of professionals.
  • Experience working with people in various roles, such as board members, donors, volunteers, the public and/or all levels of staff.
  • Experience in developing program-wide strategies and guidelines and planning for successful implementation.
