Working closely with the Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO), the Deputy Director of Philanthropy assists directly in the planning and implementation of a comprehensive development program that secures the significant financial resources from individuals, foundations and corporations within New York State to support state, national and international conservation goals.  Manages fundraising functions including and not limited to: major gifts pipeline process by leading a team of motivated major gift fundraisers located across the State to significantly increase private funds raised in support of local, state and global conservation priorities; operations;  stewardship; research; and helps the CPO to establish fundraising goals and projections.  Along with the CPO, serve as primary functional liaison to the World Office and NYS Chapters.  The Deputy Director will serve as a strong “number two” to the CPO, and will readily take on additional responsibilities as this growing office evolves into a leading philanthropy team for The Nature Conservancy worldwide, including the planning of a State-wide campaign and developing a targeted major gifts portfolio of his/her own.

 

The Deputy Philanthropy Director in New York works under the supervision of the Chief Philanthropy Officer in New York and in close partnership with senior staff and other senior fundraisers.  S/he serves as the leader of the New York Major Gifts team (including the direct supervision of nearly a half dozen major gift officers) to design, implement and assess effective strategies for identified major and principal gifts donors and prospects (i.e., those with the capacity to make a $100,000 or greater gift over three years or a six-figure deferred gift). These fund raising efforts support local, state and global conservation priorities and are aimed at raising a significant portion of the current approximately $25 million annual New York fundraising goal. S/he involves and engages the New York State Director, senior conservation and leadership in New York and across the organization -- involving them in strategy development and solicitations, keeping them apprised of interactions, and collaborating to ensure maximum fundraising effectiveness. S/he also works directly with volunteer leaders on the New York State Board of Trustees and other Chapter Boards across the state, a group that includes business and conservation leaders from the metropolitan area and around New York.

The Deputy Philanthropy Director must be able to work in a highly complex, matrix organization and in collaboration with philanthropy staff at the Worldwide Office, in other key states and Conservancy-wide, as well as with state-based scientists and conservation experts and staff across a dispersed and complex, global organization. S/he and the Major Gifts/Operations team work closely with and are supported by a team of marketing professionals, gift planning experts and other resources. To be successful candidates must be curious and self-motivated to learn about domestic and global conservation. Finally, the Deputy Philanthropy Director understands and complies with all Conservancy gift-related policies and procedures, and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.  
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in building and maintaining long-term relationships with philanthropy constituents, including Board members, volunteers, major donors and institutional funders 
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of senior fundraisers. Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
  • Events experience a plus.
  • Successful experience in asking for and closing seven-figure major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with individual fundraising constituents.
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results.

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least 7 years’ fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing and supervising a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Experience with current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.
  • Experience in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in of the basics of charitable gift planning.
