The challenge? Provide a range of custom-tailored operations and maintenance solutions. This position is designed to develop an individual with the requisite skills into an O&M Project Manager quickly. Relocation is typically required for movement into the Project Manager Intern role.

Our Operations & Maintenance Wastewater Project Manager Intern will be provided a great opportunity to work at our Gilroy Facility located in Santa Clara, CA, just 25 miles south of San Jose. The developmental role will lead to position for someone wishing to attain a Project Manager role in the near future. Responsibilities will include working with project leadership and staff to assist in supervising the daily O&M activities as well as working with the Project Manager to learn the O&M systems and tools to provide client support. The position will assist in the responsibility for process control, collecting and managing plant data, developing schedules, and training and assessing associate performance. This position will learn and champion the continued development of CH2M HILL O&M systems and use of the project SCADA and Op10 database software. Also included are responsibilities in assisting the Project Manager in developing and maintaining site-specific computer programs, administering the project budget and delivering superior service to all customers. This position must be able to coordinate activities with the Laboratory, Maintenance, and Administrative groups as well as outside contractors and governmental agencies.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan, organize and direct the operation, maintenance, modification and improvement of one or more water and/or wastewater treatment plants and appurtenant facilities.
  • Analyze operational process control procedures and institute changes when necessary to achieve full compliance with all local, state, and federal regulatory agency water quality and solids disposal requirements as defined in the service contract with the client.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and prepare reports required by the client and all regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with supervisors and subordinates.
  • Administer and monitor operational budgets to attain financial objectives.
  • Establish and monitor objectives for subordinate salaried personnel and performance objectives for treatment plants within his or her responsibility.
  • Maintain technical operational skills at the highest level and remain informed of the latest developments in the field.
  • Establish cooperative relationships with subordinates, vendors, contractors, and all others contacted during work assignments.
  • Maintain accurate operational records and maintenance records; prepare reports required by the client and all regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbally, with supervisors and subordinates and the client.
  • Administer and monitor operational budgets to attain financial objectives.
  • Develop plans and procedures to insure that facilities operate within permit limits as an integrated system.
  • Recommend additions or improvements to the treatment facilities and analyzes their cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain technical operational skills at the highest level and remains informed of the latest developments in the field.
  • May be responsible for the administration and technical support of one or more treatment plants.
  • Inspect facilities, analyze and evaluates O&M functions, review records and data, interview and select new O&M personnel, initiate or recommend new or improved O&M methods or practices.
  • Prepares monthly reports of O&M and compliance for the client as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Prepare, review and approve operations reports and budget requests from subordinate department heads.
  • Assists in the preparation of specifications for major equipment and material purchases.
  • Maintain effective communications and working relationships with employees, the client, consultants, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Basic Qualifications


  • Associates Degree or experience in lieu of degree
  • Knowledge of water and wastewater treatment technologies
  • Valid Drivers License
  • Proficient use of computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Preferred Qualifications


  • Certification as a water/wastewater operator at the highest level attainable in the state in which the project is located. A 1-year grace period to attain that certification is acceptable if reciprocity or relocation is involved
  • Understanding of the technical aspects of the facility to be managed.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal relations and personnel management skills.
  • Willingness to travel approximately 25%.
  • Upon completion of the Leadership Program, you would be eligible to receive the standard  relocation package to your assigned project.
