Minimum Requirements: B.A. or B.S. in scientific discipline in one of the following: environmental science, chemistry, or geology.
Must have knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
Must speak and write the English language well. Must also be detailed-oriented and focused.
Must have a valid driver's license and must have an automobile for field assignments. No technical licenses or certificates are required. Job Description: This is a combination job for serving a quality control (QC) function and field sampling position. The successful candidate will work in the data quality management (DQM) group. The DQM group works with all project managers (PMs) who perform environmental investigations. The candidate will assess the usability of the analytical data received from subcontractor laboratories (also called validation) using set standards.
The successful candidate will be trained on the URS validation processes and apply them to reviews of analytical chemistry reports from many different subcontractors. He/she will also learn new facets of chemistry related to the environmental testing industry. He/she may also participate in project initiation meetings to guide PMs on test methods, QC procedures, and laboratories. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver reports on assigned projects on-time and with a high degree of accuracy. He/she will also perform field sampling assignments when required to learn secondary skills related to environmental consulting. Field assignments include groundwater sampling, soil sampling, sediment sampling, water level measurements, field chemistry testing, or any other field task required by the office.
Training will be given for all field assignments. In the office setting, the candidate will perform computer work (report writing and database management). Field assignments also require attention to details, note-taking, as well as physical labor.
Additionally, the successful candidate will learn report writing skills and environmental sampling (various media). There will be extensive document reviews and evaluations. Growth in both areas will span a period of 3 to 5 years. He/she will work with his/her supervisor and interact with URS PMs who performs a field investigation and collects samples for environmental testing. Some projects are also from other URS offices; therefore the candidate will perform work for other offices as directed by the supervisor. Projects for this office include ASTM Phase II, Superfund RI/FS, Remedial Action/Corrective Measures Studies, AFCEE, USACE, RCRA RFI, Illinois SRP, Indiana brownfield, etc.
Candidate will have ample opportunity to learn the URS environmental consulting business, work with very professional, respected individuals impacting the local (IL, MI, WI, and IN) environmental business industry. The position is entry-level so the individual can grow into management or other technical staff positions within URS. URS also has a wide network of offices across the U.S. and world. EOE M/F/D/V
