ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Fire Stewardship Technician will conduct field work on both Conservancy and partner properties in Southeastern Massachusetts (Plymouth, Cape Cod and the Islands), and potentially throughout the Northeastern U.S. There will also be office duties at TNC field stations in Plymouth and on Martha’s Vineyard. Duties may include conducting safe wildland fire operations, contributing to management unit planning and mapping, fire break clearing, fire equipment maintenance and repair, participation in fuel reduction and FIREWISE projects, vegetation and rare species monitoring, and fuel-load sampling. The Fire Stewardship Technician will be responsible for working with hand tools, pumps, chainsaws, type six, type seven, and type three engines, trailers, tractor and skid-steer, mower decks and forestry attachments, GPS devices, GIS, digital cameras, and word processing and spreadsheet software. 

DUTIES:
  • Assist with the management of fire adapted communities, including Pitch Pine-Scrub Oak Barrens, Scrub Oak Thickets, Oak Woodlands and Savannahs, Heathlands and Grasslands, using both prescribed fire and mechanical treatments.
  • Maintenance of fire equipment for the 2011/2012 burn season. Includes mechanical work on tractors and skid steers, use of chain saws and chippers.
  • Assist with various GPS/GIS activities.
  • Perform administrative duties related to fire and restoration activities.
  • Assist with training fellow staff and partner firefighters.
  • Work with TNC and partner stewardship staff and volunteers to perform preserve maintenance.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in the natural resources field or equivalent experience.
  • Certified completion of S-130\190, L-180 and I-100 NWCG courses.
  • Experience using maps, GPS, and aerial photos.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety and learning, excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, to balance several tasks at once, and get along with a wide variety of people.
  • Bachelor's degree in natural resources field or equivalent experience.
  • Certified completion of S-130\190, L-180 and I-100 NWCG courses.
  • Valid state or international driver’s license and experience towing trailers.
  • Experience operating chainsaws, poles saws and brush cutters; experience operating ATVs/UTVs (certified training preferred); experience operating small tractors and skid steerspreferred.
  • Experience communicating effectively in person and in writing; some experience with computers, word processing required.
  • Experience performing difficult physical work for extended and irregular periods, under adverse conditions and in various extremes of weather. Ability to complete the NWCG arduous fitness test (walk 3 miles while carrying a 45-pound pack on flat terrain in less than 45 minutes).

  • Ability and willingness to work weekends and travel frequently and on short notice for extended periods to various locations, potentially including Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Pennsylvania.
  • Must be flexible, with the ability and willingness to work some weekends, and to travel frequently with short notice for extended periods.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
EMPLOYMENT DURATION                         
  • Short-Term, Part-Time: February 13, 2012 – August 10, 2012
  • Length of hiring term may be extended contingent upon funding availability and staff performance

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers .

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

$15.00/hour; variable hours
