ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Maryland/DC Chapter’s Community Engagement Manager is responsible for the development,implementation and evaluation of a strategic community relations program aimed at:
  • increasing the Conservancy’s visibility for the Maryland/DC Chapter,
  • engaging a broader constituency in support of conservation,
  • engaging those who are interested in conservation but not yet familiar with the Conservancy, and
  • reaching the next generation (ages 30-45) of conservation leaders and supporters in the Washington, DC market.

Position helps to raise the organization’s profile through select and strategic venues and partnerships, serves as “brand ambassador” for the Conservancy’s mission, and inspires people to want to learn more and engage with the organization in meaningful ways.

Position works closely with marketing and conservation staff and Chapter leadership to develop a strategic community relations program that, over time, will build a broader constituency in the Washington, DC market in support of conservation. Includes identifying and prioritizing new opportunities, effectively engaging our target audiences, and creating and evaluating new programs and partnerships aimed at these groups.

The Community Engagement Manager reports to the Director of Marketing for Maryland/DC and Virginia and will work closely with the state director and Chapter staff in the development of a strategic community relations program.   This position does not directly manage any staff, but may manage program budgets and relationships with partners, donors and volunteers.  

The Community Engagement Manager ensures consistent delivery of programs in keeping with the vision and goals of The Nature Conservancy by aligning volunteer interests with the Chapter’s goals.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, environmental education or related field and minimum 3 years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Experience in marketing.  Communications and public speaking skills.
  • Experienced project manager with ability to develop plans and manage multiple projects.
  • Experience supervising and managing staff, volunteers and/or teams.
  • Experienced in community relations and cultivating/managing relationships with individuals, businesses and non-profits.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Passionate about conservation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, environmental education or related field and 3-5 years related experience.
  • Experience in marketing and serving as a “brand ambassador” or Community Engagement Specialist for a company or organization. Strong communications and excellent interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Experienced in community relations and building/strengthening relationships with individuals, businesses and other non-profits.
  • Strong project manager; demonstrated ability to develop, direct and manage partnerships, events, and to develop plans and manage multiple projects simultaneously and measure and evaluate the results of plans and programs.
  • Skilled writer and editor; demonstrated ability to promote events and communicate with individuals and communities through social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter.
  • Experienced in developing, implementing, and measuring strategic outreach plans and programs, especially those targeted to a younger (30-45 year old) audience.
  • Knowledge of current and evolving trends in marketing, conservation and public relations.
  • Proven organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience supervising and managing staff, volunteers and/or teams.
  • Volunteer management and training experience a plus.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • This position requires a willingness to travel and work select evenings and/or weekends, as needed.
