POSITION SUMMARY
The Nature Conservancy is conducting a project to assess and prioritize the Chesapeake Bay’s most critical habitats in partnership with federal and state agencies and other partners.  The project is designed to integrate diverse geophysical and biological data to create synthesis products that reveal conservation priorities and empower partners to develop and implement meaningful conservation strategies.  The project will identify areas of high biological significance that merit particular attention for natural resource management, other regional marine conservation strategies and innovative policies that are evaluated based on ecological, social, economic and political criteria.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Estuarine Ecologist is responsible for helping to lead the development and implementation of the Chesapeake habitat prioritization project. S/he will provide the scientific and technical leadership required to carry out the project, and coordinate activities with partners at the federal, state, and academic levels.  The Estuarine Ecologist will apply his/her experience and training in marine and estuarine ecosystems to support regional, science-based strategies that will maintain and restore the natural processes that ensure long term viability and ecological health of marine biodiversity. Knowledge of current scientific thinking about the conservation of coastal, estuarine and benthic marine communities and species is required. Knowledge and experience in marine spatial planning is also a requirement.  Position may supervise other staff.  Supervised by the Chesapeake Bay Program Director, this is a one-year to 16-month grant-funded position, from approximately January 2012 – February 2013.

JOB DUTIES

The Estuarine Ecologist will help to lead the identification, prioritization, and conservation of critical habitats in Chesapeake Bay.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Work with a core team to ensure timely completion of the Chesapeake habitat assessment and prioritization project.  This includes characterizing regional estuarine habitats, assessing threats, and identifying regional conservation priorities.
  • Collect and manage data pertaining to estuarine ecosystems.
  • Compile, summarize, and synthesize current scientific information about critical coastal and estuarine habitats in Chesapeake Bay.
  • Apply innovative, science-based approaches required to address key conservation challenges related to habitat conservation in Chesapeake Bay.
  • Support development of science-based metrics to measure conservation effectiveness and success.
  • Identify ways to grow conservation strategies to regional scale.
  • Help to build collaborative relationships with strategic partners.
  • Conduct research, write project reports and develop proposals.
  • Work with Program Director to ensure grant reports are completed and submitted in timely fashion.
  • Work with state chapter staff, Eastern Division conservation staff, Global Marine staff and other TNC staff to assess, integrate, and analyze information from existing data sets, GIS data sets, technical literature, and field assessments.  Such work includes marine spatial planning and GIS analyses of marine ecosystems, communities and species inventory.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate degree in science-related field and 2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
  • Experience synthesizing, interpreting and communicating scientific information and preparing reports on findings.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite Software.
  • Experience working and communicating with a diverse group of people.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced degree in a marine-science related field and at least 2 years on-the-ground (or on the water) experience in applied marine science, spatial planning, and /or environmental management, with a focus on one or more of the following: fisheries and other marine species management and protection, coastal zone management, marine and near shore ecosystem restoration, and oceanographic processes, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 2 years prior experience with spatial analyses using GIS.
  • Knowledge of species, habitats, and ecosystem processes and their conservation needs in Chesapeake Bay.
  • Ability to collect, manipulate, analyze, and interpret scientific data and prepare reports of findings.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a number of staff and external parties, sometimes under pressure, in order to complete project work and goals in a timely manner.
  • Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with a wide variety of people and to work collaboratively with diverse partners. Flexible and patient, while remaining persistent towards ultimate goals.  May speak with and in front of varied audiences on scientific topics and the Conservancy’s mission.  Demonstrated excellence in verbal and writing skills.
  • Ability to manage time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Demonstrated experience writing grants and researching proposals.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers) and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
  • Ability and willingness to travel and occasionally on evenings and weekends.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
12 to 16 month full-time position, January 2012 – February 2013

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Willingness to work long and sometimes irregular hours.
  • The Estuarine Ecologistmay work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
