TNC POSITION SUMMARY The Nature Conservancy is conducting a project to assess and prioritize the Chesapeake Bay’s most critical habitats in partnership with federal and state agencies and other partners. The project is designed to integrate diverse geophysical and biological data to create synthesis products that reveal conservation priorities and empower partners to develop and implement meaningful conservation strategies. The project will identify areas of high biological significance that merit particular attention for natural resource management, other regional marine conservation strategies and innovative policies that are evaluated based on ecological, social, economic and political criteria. TNC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Estuarine Ecologist is responsible for helping to lead the development and implementation of the Chesapeake habitat prioritization project. S/he will provide the scientific and technical leadership required to carry out the project, and coordinate activities with partners at the federal, state, and academic levels. The Estuarine Ecologist will apply his/her experience and training in marine and estuarine ecosystems to support regional, science-based strategies that will maintain and restore the natural processes that ensure long term viability and ecological health of marine biodiversity. Knowledge of current scientific thinking about the conservation of coastal, estuarine and benthic marine communities and species is required. Knowledge and experience in marine spatial planning is also a requirement. Position may supervise other staff. Supervised by the Chesapeake Bay Program Director, this is a one-year to 16-month grant-funded position, from approximately January 2012 – February 2013. JOB DUTIES The Estuarine Ecologist will help to lead the identification, prioritization, and conservation of critical habitats in Chesapeake Bay.
