You should be a self-motivated, team-focused individual with a BS in Engineering (MS preferred) and successful 5+ year track record in environmental engineering, including developing technical scopes of work, budgets, schedules, site testing, design/optimize systems, evaluate viable remedial alternatives, and change management and have a desire to grow personally as well as professionally with each construction engineer job. SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE: This individual is responsible as the construction engineer for complex contaminated site management and environmental construction projects primarily located in northern New Jersey. The construction projects typically involve civil works, site development/restoration, earthwork operations, remedial systems, land disposal facilities, dredging, air treatment systems, and related environmental projects. The employee would be part of the team directing all subcontractor activities at the site and provides overall direction and guidance in the day to day construction work. Candidate must have the ability to manage multiple subcontractors that may be performing work activities concurrently. Our Environmental Construction Engineer:
- Act as the main technical adviser on a construction site for subcontractors, crafts people and operatives;
- Checking plans, drawings and quantities for accuracy of calculations;
- Ensuring all materials used and work performed are per specifications;
- Agreeing a price for materials, and making cost-effective solutions and proposals for the intended project;
- Managing, monitoring and interpreting the contract design documents supplied by the client/architect;
- Working with the project team in dealing with any consultants, sub-contractors, supervisors, planners, quantity surveyors and the general workforce involved in the project;
- Working with the project team in dealing with local, state and federal regulators to ensure compliance with applicable regulations;
- Working with the project team on a day-to-day basis to manage the site, including supervising and monitoring the work of any subcontractors;
- Working with the project team in planning the work and efficiently organizing the site facilities in order to meet agreed deadlines;
- Working with the project team in overseeing quality control, health and safety matters on site;
- Preparing reports as required;
- Working with the project team in resolving any unexpected technical difficulties, and other problems that may arise.
- Facilitate Construction Manager in supervision of the total construction effort to ensure project is constructed in accordance with final design, budget and schedule; includes interfacing with client representatives, other contractors, etc.;
- Resolves problems and difficulties encountered or elevates it to the appropriate supervisory personnel as conditions warranty
- Evaluate, select, and apply standard techniques and procedures for engineering analysis;
- Review with Construction Manager, subcontractor submittals, including but not limited to, Requests for Information, contract clarifications, contract-required submittals, change order requests, and other documents related to compliance with project specifications.
- Provide liaison between field engineering activities and in-house design team, assume prime responsibility for assuring completion of projects in the field in conformance with design plans and specifications, and assure that clarifications and interpretations required for proper execution of the contract are implemented.
- Ensures that the company Health, Safety and Environmental Program is implemented on the project site; acts to provide a safe and healthy work environment
- Maintain license as an Engineering In Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) Is fully accountable with considerable latitude for unreviewed action
Position consists of approximately 80% field work/traveling and 20% office. CH2M HILL will not sponsor an employment visa (eg. H-1B visa, etc) to fill this position.
Basic Qualifications
- Four-year degree in engineering or other technical discipline or equivalent combination of technical training and/or experience.
- A minimum of 5 year field engineer experience.
- EIT or PE License (NJ license or ability to obtain)
- Requires comprehensive knowledge of site remediation and federal and state regulations including CERCLA and RCRA
- Experience implementing groundwater, soil, and sediment remediation technologies.
- HAZWOPER certification or ability to obtain
- Must be able to perform field work
Specialized Skills
- Through knowledge of engineering aspects of construction (technology, equipment, methods), quality assurance/quality control, negotiations, costs control schedules and safety required.
- Excellent communication, organization and supervisory skills essential
- Must have the ability to interact and communicate with multiple project stakeholders
