Job Description:  CH2M HILL Structural Design Technician Careers – Gainesville, FL

The challenge? Help provide and sustain clean water resources around the world. Our Structural Designer career path is your chance to lead structural design efforts for municipal water / wastewater facility projects . As a contributing member of a project team, you will perform a variety of tasks requiring knowledge and application of basic engineering and drafting principles. You will have the opportunity to utilize your technical skills as well as collaborate with our regional water engineering staff to support projects in the water engineering markets. As a Structural Design Technician, you will work with senior engineers to perform structural design work including concept development, detailed design, preparation of construction documents, and the generation of structural calculations. You should have excellent oral and written communications, self-motivation, team-oriented work practices, strong data analysis skills, technical problem solving ability, organizational skills, multitasking ability and excellent computer skills as well as a desire to grow both personally and professionally with each new design project.

Our Structural Design Technicians:


  • Under the direction of the project lead structural engineer, and in concert or coordination with the Project or Design Manager, works and meets with peers, project management staff, or administrative staff of client, sub-consultant, or co-consultant to define project needs relating to structural technology and to meet project goals.
  • Identifies client structural design needs, which may impact project scope, budget, or schedule to Design or Project Manager and lead structural engineer and suggests solutions to meeting client and project needs.
  • Perform semi-complex computations under the guidance of senior registered professional structural engineers, such as: calculating the design loads and area of reinforcing steel required for semi-complex reinforced concrete structures; calculating and sizing reinforced concrete footings and columns for semi-complex one-story building or facilities.
  • Produce designs, layouts, and draft documents using 2D or 3D CAD modeling techniques. Determines the location and orientation of 2D views extracted from 3D models.
  • Directs junior structural technicians to complete and annotate model extractions. 
  • Are proficient and innovative in producing or directing others to produce designs, layouts, and draft documents using approved structural analysis software.
  • Drive ownership of health & safety in all aspects of project execution, office and personal environments.

  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

Basic Qualifications



  • A two-year degree in Computer Drafting and Design or Engineering Technology
  • 7 years experience in CAD setup and detailing for water infrastructure projects utilizing both AutoCAD, Microstation V8 (XM highly desirable) and Inroads

Degree Required

Associates or 2 Year Degree
