EDUCATION An advanced degree in geotechnical engineering (MS required, PhD preferred) from an accredited college or university, DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION JOB DIMENSIONS: Supervision Received: Performs most assignments independently with instructions as to the general results expected but receives technical guidance from engineering specialists and /or supervisors on unusual or complex problems. Supervision Exercised: Provides technical direction and assigns work to subordinate engineers, designers, drafters, technicians and others who assist in performing specific assignments. Contacts: Independently contacts vendor representatives and project field personnel to gather or give information and contacts client counterparts as directed. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: Plans, schedules, conducts, and coordinates detailed phases of engineering work for a global business unit usually in one discipline in a project or staff group. The role performs work that involves conventional engineering practice but may include complex features such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials and/or difficult coordination requirements. Performs work using Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) and appropriate 2-D and 3-D computer aided design and computer aided engineering (CAD and CAE) tools. Plans, coordinates or prepares equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for geotechnical engineering investigations and related construction tools, methods, equipment and subcontracts. Candidate should have expertise with related geotechnical in-situ and laboratory testing. Must be familiar (both office and field experience) with geotechnical site investigations, including planning, development, contracting and execution of geotechnical and geophysical programs. Evaluates available geotechnical data and evaluate corresponding geotechnical design parameters. Performs geotechnical analysis and design for deep and shallow foundations, sheet pile structures and other geotechnical related structures or structural elements. Assesses dynamic impedance of individual and group piles. Supports pile installations by developing driving criteria and conducting driveability analyses. Is familiar with machine foundations - dynamic response and associated designs. Performs pavement design and analysis. Performs geotechnical assessments and related design related to settlement, lateral foundation design, pile capacity determination (including downdrag). Evaluates or designs preloading systems, including the related settlement and time-rate analyses. Supports construction heavy-lift assessments and designs. Assists in on-the-job-training of assigned personnel and provides input for their performance evaluations. Prepares letters to vendors and clients. Reviews bid analyses and make recommendation. Advantageous A professional license or accreditation in an appropriate engineering discipline from a recognized licensing board. Knowledge of current computer applications for engineering and design including appropriate knowledge of CAD (both 2-D and 3-D), finite element methods, lateral and vertical pile capacity, slope stability, and relevant Bechtel standard computer applications to perform the work. Specific computer applications including PLAXIS-3D, FLAC-3D, UniSettle, LPILE, SASSI, APILE, GROUP, Shaft, Dyna5, GRLWEAP and Surfer. Working knowledge of non-linear constitutive models for geological material as applied in FEM codes. Understanding of engineering planning and control methods including computerized methods. Understanding of the roles played by other Bechtel engineering and construction departments on projects including basic construction practices and the economics involved.. Understanding of industry or regulatory codes, standards and design criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline. Skill in oral and written communication.
