Job Description: 

Job Summary:  Provide educational opportunities to visiting classrooms

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in planning curriculum, method of presentation and outline of educational material
  • Conducts workshops or field trips for students and groups; takes and teaches students participating in school field trips through school tour program 
  • Assists in training and coaching volunteers
  • Provides instruction for area teachers including pre- and post-tour information and activities
  • Provide interpretation on bayou boat tours
  • Other duties may be assigned

  1. Work functions are performed to create high quality environmental education program
  2. Support Foundation’s goals and values and further Shangri La’s mission
  3. Give and welcome feedback; contribute to building a positive team spirit
  4. Provide courteous, professional, timely and accurate service and support to all visitors, vendors, volunteers and co-workers.
  5. Follow policies and procedures; maintain appropriate records, complete administrative tasks correctly and on time.
  6. Maintain proficiency in computer related programs to perform job duties
  7. Follows safe work procedures, ensures all volunteers and visitors follow safe procedures, reports potentially unsafe conditions, notify supervisor of damages, defects, or the need for repairs that could prevent deterioration of equipment or possible injury to employees or others.

Experience: Experience at a nature center or outdoor classroom 

 

Education: Bachelor’s degree required in natural science or education with emphasis on science, or environmental science

 

Other Requirements:

  • Current Driver’s License and good driving record
  • Ability to devise and carry out education programs, including preparation and use of publications and exhibits
  • Knowledge of environmental education techniques and resources
  • Skill in oral and written communication techniques appropriate education levels and objectives
  • Skill in using research techniques
  • Knowledge of education methods
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records
  • Ability to coordinate a variety of tasks and to plan, implement and prioritize workloads 
  • Knowledge of emergency evacuation; First Aid training

 

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and talk and hear.   The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.  The employee must posses the ability to transport self at least three miles per day in an outdoor situation.  The ability to handle a variety of living creatures is also required in this position.  Requires moving on and off of boats and moving along boardwalks within swamps.

 

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work with students and teachers in class-size groups under a variety of conditions including inside in museums and theaters, and outside in natural ecosystems.  Approximately 80% of time outside in a swamp ecosystem in both hot and cold weather.   These areas are commonly wet, humid, extremely hot or cold.  Noise levels are generally quiet.  Environment includes blooming plants, plant saps, fertilizers and other possible allergens.   Tasks may require exposure to insects, snakes and/or rodents according to prevailing habitat conditions
