ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Science Technician II works closely with science staff to gather data relating to a grant funded wetlands monitoring project in order to identify priorities and direct the implementation of wetlands conservation.  Additional duties relating to science projects may be assigned, as time allows. This may include some or all of the following:
  • Gathers and synthesizes data relating to wetlands field monitoring project.
  • Has completed at least 1 week of National Wetlands Condition Assessment Monitoring training and served on a field crew monitoring wetlands for at least 2 years, including supervising as a field crew leader for at least 2 field seasons.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and comfortable contacting and engaging land owners
  • Excellent plant identification/botany skills, including knowledge of Western plants. Preference given to those with prior knowledge of Wyoming plants
  • Experience with MS Access and has created at least 1 large database with forms and reports in MS Access
  • Experience with GIS databases, entering and analyzing GIS data.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in science-related field and 1 year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience utilizing GIS software and data to create maps.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software and Web browsers. 
  • Experience managing databases and producing reports.
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1-2 years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Has completed at least 1 week of National Wetlands Condition Assessment Monitoring training and served on a field crew monitoring wetlands for at least 2 years, including supervising as a field crew leader for at least 2 field seasons
  • 2 years’ experience monitoring wetlands in the field and supervising wetland monitoring field staff
  • Excellent plant identification/botany skills, including knowledge of Western plants. Preference given to those with prior knowledge of Wyoming plants.
  • Knowledge of natural systems and natural systems management techniques.
  • Analyzing, manipulating, and interpreting data, including statistics.
  • Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).
  • Managing and prioritizing tasks from multiple sources.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Science Technician II may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions may:
  • require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
  • Comfortable and capable in harsh working conditions (i.e. weather, bugs, high water, aggressive cows), including camping overnight in the backcountry, and thriving in a remote Western setting
