Role Overview

Evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering methods, techniques, procedures and criteria, using independent judgment in making adaptations and modifications. Performs assignments, which have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables for an engineering discipline within a global business unit.

Essential Job Duties

  1. Performs work, generally within one discipline, which involves the preparation, interpretation or review of calculations, specifications, plans, investigations, surveys, structures, systems or equipment with relatively few complex features.
  2. Participates in one or more of the following:
a) Equipment design and development
b) System design, including concept sketches and layouts
c) Testing of materials
d) Preparation of specifications and design calculations
e) Reviewing and checking designs, drawings and data by other engineers or by suppliers
f) Preparation or review of engineering studies and reports
g) Prepartion or review of material quantity estimates
h) Uses engineering computer aided design/computer aided engineering (CAD/CAE) tools
  1. Prepares letters for replies to vendor correspondence.
  2. Monitors project controls within discipline.
  3. Reviews design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a moderate degree of complexity, and prepares comments and recommendations.
  4. Assists in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.
  5. Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
  6. Develops low voltage power systems.
  7. Develops simple elementaries.
  8. Reviews or prepares basic power system design for undergroung, cable tray, grounding, and lighting systems.
  9. Interprets P&IDs and logic narratives.

Basic Qualifications:

Technical knowledge of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and construction methods and materials, and application of computer aided engineering (CAE)/computer aided design (CAD) tools to engineering problems.
Knowledge of project controls within discipline.
Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards and design criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
Familiar with supplier capabilities for standard electrical equipment and bulk materials.
Understanding of basic electrical equations for calculating short circuit, motor starting, and voltage drop.
Understanding of the application of electrical equipment.
Understanding of logic circuits and development of elementaries.
Understands basic power system design for underground, cable tray, grounding, and lighting systems.
Ability to interpret P&IDs and logic narratives.
Knowledge and understanding of the basics of low voltage power systems.
Knowledge of electrical engineering theories.
Ability to change logic narratives to wiring diagram form.
Use of SETROUTE reports to review design. Setroute is Bechtel's proprietary program for preparing Cable & Raceway Schedules.
Basic skill in oral and written communication.
The above is normally acquired through:
  • A recognized degree in an engineering or a related scientific discipline, from an accredited college or university, OR
  • A professional Engineer-In-Training (EIT) license from a recognized licensing board, OR
  • A sufficient number of specialized courses in relevant general engineering or appropriate engineering disciplines to meet job requirements, AND
  • Developmental experience such as practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operation in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.

For positions primarily of a specialized nature, an equivalent graduate level education may be substituted for experience.

Grade 24
Performs overall systems design and engineering tasks, within a discipline, having some degree of complexity.
Understands roles played by other disciplines on the project.
Participates in reviewing and checking designs, drawings and data by other engineers or by suppliers.
Monitors project controls within discipline.
Assists in the on-the-job training of people assigned.
Familiar with all Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs) and their application to projects.

Knowledgeable of design standards and guides and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs) applicable to the discipline.
Knowledge of the preparation of electrical power systems.
Applies knowledge of electrical equipment and materials.
Understands basics of the procurement process for electrical equipment and bulk material.

Understands low power systems and basics of medium voltage power systems.
Understands SETROUTE and electrical engineering terminology.
Performs manual voltage drop, short circuit and motor starting calculations.
Good knowledge of electrical construction methods and materials.

Responsive to electrical planning and scheduling.
Familiar with the application of electrical equipment.
Understands basic power system design for underground, cable tray, grounding, and lighting design.
Ability to interpret P&IDs and logic narratives.

Performs overall system design and associated coordination.
Performs electrical system calculations on simple power systems.
Uses manual calculations to check ET AP reports.
Selects and specifies low voltage equipment and bulk materials.

Prepares material requisitions for low voltage equipment and bulk materials.
Assists in the development of simple medium voltage one-line diagrams.
Grade 23 Understands the basic discipline work processes.
Performs engineering tasks, within a discipline, having a minor degree of complexity.
Participates in reviewing and checking designs, drawings and data from suppliers.
Familiar with relevant Engineering Department Procedures (EDPs), design standards and guides, and Bechtel Standard Application Programs (BSAPs).
