Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or appropriate discipline. • Minimum 4 years of experience in civil engineering design with at least 3 years of transit/transportation system engineering design with a focus on freeway and interchange projects. • Requires California Professional Engineers license or ability to obtain within 1 year. • Requires the ability to perform geometric design of rail transit systems and civil design of freeway facilities. Requires familiarity with rail transit design standards and ability to work with senior engineers to develop a preliminary plan set. • Must have strong communication skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. • Requires a working knowledge of CADD and geometric design tools. • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. • Position requires good organizational skills and interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment. • Must be able to work within assigned budgets, estimate time required for specific work tasks and complete work assignments with specified schedules. • Valid Driver's License. • Qualified applicants who are offered a position must pass a pre-employment substance abuse test. URS is a national leader in rail transit and highway engineering including light rail, heavy rail and freeway design. This position will involve the development of rail transit and freeway designs from initial conceptual drawings to preliminary and final design plans. You will have the opportunity to work with senior rail and transportation engineers in a multidisciplinary environment. You will have responsibility for documenting rail transit designs including design standards, quantity estimates and cost estimates. You will assist in the development of work scopes for work proposals.
The position will be part of Engineering Group within the Environmental and Engineering Department of the California Central Coast Region working out of the Santa Barbara or Santa Maria offices.
The candidate will interact with other staff in the California Central Coast and Southern California region as well as staff in other URS offices through email, written and oral communications. The candidate will interact with clients and other engineering professionals to continue to build professional relationships and understand existing and potential client needs.
This position will help to develop transit and freeway system design concepts and will be responsible for developing designs consistent with design standards. The candidate may assist in transit and transportation business development including the preparation of proposals.
The candidate will participate in the design of transportation systems, including transit, freight, passenger and freeway systems. Typical transportation design projects will be for transit/transportation agencies, municipalities, DOT's, railroads and freight lines.
Levels of design range from conceptual (for planning projects) to final plan production (for projects to go to construction).
The successful candidate will work in a team environment on a variety of transportation planning/engineering projects. Responsibilities will include: establishing horizontal and vertical alignments, cross sections, plans, quantities, construction specifications, cost estimates, conceptual designs, functional planning, operating scenarios, assisting with environmental permitting and alignment location.
This position will report to the California Central Coast Engineering Department Manager and will work under the supervision of the Transit Business Line Leader and other Project Managers. Employee must be willing to travel within Southern California and periodically to other parts of the US to work on national transportation/transit projects. EOE M/F/D/V
