ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Philanthropy - Europe (DOP Europe) is responsible for all aspects of outright major and principal donor fundraising for the Conservancy in Europe. S/he will manage six core responsibilities: 1) raising principal & major gifts; 2) in cooperation with the Europe executive director build a volunteer leadership board from donor prospects and key influencers living in the UK or continental Europe. 3) Work with volunteer leadership and staff to build a portfolio of 50+ major and principal gift level prospects including foundations, corporations, and individuals. 4.) Develop, implement and oversee a fundraising plan and strategy for launching a private philanthropy effort in Europe. 5) Leverage the efforts of non -Europe based team members and volunteer leaders in fundraising, including donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. 6.) Work with TNC senior level program staff to engage in donor cultivation and solicitation where appropriate.

The Director of Philanthropy Europe will be accountable for fundraising at the highest level, including identification of prospects, development of donor strategies, coordination with Board of Director members and other volunteer leaders, and sophisticated cultivation with experience in managing principal gifts. S/he is responsible for enhancing, establishing and administering innovative programs designed to achieve both short and long-range advancements in major gifts fundraising. The Director of Philanthropy - Europe reports to the Executive Director of TNC Europe and Deputy Director of Principal Gifts. This position will manage staff as hired to the department. S/he serves on the region's leadership team and is considered a senior manager of The Nature Conservancy

DUTIES
  • Direct innovative, high-level fundraising efforts that enable the organization to raise complex, principal and major gifts among new and existing prospects and donors in a new geography.
  • Set and meet fundraising objectives for TNC Europe.
  • Identify and cultivate volunteer leaders via the creation of a Europe Trustee Council.
  • Provide ongoing and high-level counsel to Conservancy leadership on elevating fundraising at the Conservancy in Europe and provide input into any developing marketing and membership strategies.
  • Develop and work closely with the Corporate Practices team on corporate engagement in Europe.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least 7 years' fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing and supervising a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Experience with current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.
  • Experience in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in of the basics of charitable gift planning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least 10 years' experience in senior-level fundraising.
  • Ability and flexibility to travel internationally on a frequent basis, including all continents minus Antarctica.
  • Willingness and desire to live in London or another major European city.
  • Conversational fluency in more than 1 European language in addition to English.
  • Comfort and familiarity with charitable giving in the UK and continental Europe.
  • Knowledge and prior experience living in Europe, understanding of European business environment, various EU cultures.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset and demonstrated ability to work independently with little to no oversight.
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity, professional growth and connectivity across the network of philanthropy professionals at the Conservancy.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gift giving, complex gifts, solicitation and capital campaigns.
  • Proven success in asking for and closing major and complex gifts, and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Capable of leading teams in a decentralized environment with a service-oriented approach to the field.
  • Must be independent and self-motivated with the ability to participate effectively in a team environment. Superior analytical, strategic planning, and problem solving skills.
