ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The LEAF Program Science Assistant will help with research, monitoring and maintaining of two environmental projects located in several boroughs of New York City.  S/he will assist NYC Parks & Recreation and Columbia University with a study of the value of green roofs for biodiversity as well as help maintain green roofs atop 10 NYC Parks’ recreation centers by watering, weeding and collecting plant and other biodiversity data as needed. Additionally, for a maximum of 6 days, s/he will assist NYC Parks’ staff to monitor elevation changes in New York City marshes as they respond to sea level rise. Responsibilities include assisting and recording measurement data at established benchmark stations and helping to carry a limited amount of field gear into and out of the field.  S/he will assist NYC Parks’ staff with salt marsh monitoring or assessment work within City limits as needed.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • HS diploma or equivalent plus 1 year of experience. 
  • Experience using MS office, Word and Excel, and navigating the Internet.
  • Experience providing administrative support including one or more of the following:  drafting correspondence and reports, organizing files, research and data collection, or related activities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • HS Diploma or equivalent, some college preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills in English. 
  • Experience in MS Office, Word and Excel and basic Internet navigation skills. May require Power Point and Data Base Management skills. 
  • Service oriented.  Courteous, personable, tactful and able to deal effectively and sensitively with all levels of staff and public.
  • Demonstrated flexibility to changing situations and priorities.
  • Strong communication skills, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Alumni of The Nature Conservancy’s LEAF Program preferred.
  • NYS Driver’s License, helpful.

START DATE

This is a 8-week position.  The proposed dates are July 1 to August 23, 2013 with some flexibility depending on individual’s schedule.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Travel is required around the 5 boroughs of NYC and transportation costs will be covered
