CH2M HILL - Senior Estimating Professional Careers - Nuclear Business Group - Denver, Colorado The challenge? Our Senior Estimating Professional positions are responsible for managing the relationships between the project controls functions - estimating, planning/scheduling, cost control and risk management to provide estimates for nuclear projects. Each day, you will perform the more difficult and complex aspects of estimating activities within the Project Controls department. Immediate duties will be to perform cost estimating in support of the NBG Magnox proposal (multi-billion dollar, 14 year program in the UK). You should be a self-motivated, team-focused individual with strong written and verbal communication skills, with a minimum of 10 years of experience and have a desire to grow personally as well as professionally.
Our Senior Estimators: - Serve as a leader and technical expert in estimating. Successfully manage the relationships between the project controls functions-estimating, planning/scheduling, cost control, and risk management-for an estimate.
- Establish and effectively leverage cross-discipline relationships within the business group to facilitate estimate development and project controls.
- Understand business/industry trends and the implications for estimating.
- Within a business group, provide estimating leadership on strategic initiatives.
- Review and contribute to the interpretation of the request for proposal or project contract. Help identify risk areas and participate in mitigation planning.
- Develop and execute the strategy and plan for estimating activities that considers and supports the overall proposal strategy or project requirements.
- Develop estimates in the accuracy and level of detail required for the intended purpose of the estimate.
- Consolidate and summarize the discipline basis of estimates.
- Assemble discipline estimates into a final estimate for management review. Determine that the project requirements stated in the basis-of-estimate instructions are covered.
- Be familiar with the development and application of CH2M HILL and industry average overhead rates for subcontracted work.
- Provide consistency between the project estimate, project breakdown framework, and project schedule.
- Estimate cost and cumulative impact of proposed design or construction changes.
- Support procurement by contributing to cost analysis for subcontractor pricing to determine whether pricing is fair-and-reasonable.
- Understand the risk register and applicable Monte-Carlo simulation techniques. Analyze risk to evaluate and forecast contingency requirements for management estimate reviews.
- Maintain and trend historical cost data from actual hours, costs, and pricing.
- Apply practical field experience and constructability expertise to the development of conceptual estimates when minimal design drawings and information are available.
- Implement and supervise the use of standard estimating systems. Define the need and be able to modify the systems approach as appropriate to support specific proposal or project requirements.
- Must be willing to learn and maintain NBG cost estimating database of actual costs from various projects
- Eventually will become the NBG lead cost estimator upon retirement of individual currently in this position
Accountability: - Accountable to business group estimating management with matrix responsibility to project/construction management. Provide client and CH2M HILL accurate project estimates for meeting project financial goals.
Relationships: - Work with responsible business group management, principal estimators, project/construction management, and project team to deliver accurate project estimates.
- Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with other project team leads including engineering, procurement, construction, project accounting, and Develop and maintain meaningful relationships with applicable external entities such as subcontractors and material suppliers.
- Establish relationships with peers and other industry experts in project controls. Leverage memberships and participation in trade associations and industry groups,
Authority: - Develop, implement, and train on standard and project-specific estimating procedures in accordance with the enterprise or business group estimating procedures.
- Manage the coordination with other project controls and project team leads to develop deliverables.
- Identify and communicate key issues to project/construction and operations management in a timely manner to allow corrective action to be implemented.
Supervision: - Supervise the estimating team on large complex projects/programs with multiple business groups or entities (joint ventures [JVs], alliances, and so forth) including international components.
- Mentor and guide project controls staff in estimating fundamentals, procedures and guidelines.
- May serve as a departmental supervisor of estimating specialists, responsible for timely performance reviews, career development, and general staff management.
Project Delivery Knowledge : - Understand EPC/full-service and JV /consortium project delivery processes. Apply the principles of project controls to estimating work processes.
- Apply practical field experience with constructability expertise.

- Demonstrate effective leadership in the execution of project controls activities within the department.
- Develop and maintain a positive working atmosphere. Motivate peers and junior staff.
- Actively participate in the ongoing development and mentoring of junior staff.
Communications: - Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to effectively communicate complex estimating and general project controls information to varied audiences including clients, departmental management, engineering, project/construction management, and project teams.
Systems: - Deploy and modify estimating systems as appropriate to support project requirements.
- Implement and effectively use company-standard estimating systems and industry-standard estimating systems.
Basic Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, project management, or related technical field.
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience with increasing responsibility.
- Must have advanced knowledge in Sage (formerly Timberline) estimating software
Certifications/Registrations: - Active membership in AACE, PMI, or similar association.
- PSP or PMI-SP certification a plus.
