ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
From August 19 through November 22, 2013, the Management Plan Assistant will spend approximately 80% of their time assisting in writing preserve management plans.  The person selected will work out of the Southern Blue Ridge office in Asheville, North Carolina, spending significant time in the office extracting information from both electronic and paper files, Microsoft Access database reports, GIS files, field reconnaissance, and discussion with various subject matter experts to incorporate into the plans.  The Management Plan Assistant will also take the lead role in writing plans for some preserves using a provided template.  Approximately 20% of the assistant’s time will be spent supporting office GIS projects and miscellaneous conservation-related projects as required.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Candidates need to have demonstrated knowledge of Southern Blue Ridge flora and fauna, ArcGIS 9.x or higher, experience coordinating multiple, simultaneous projects, and experience handling standard business communications. 
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g.;lawn mower, chainsaw, tractor, two-way radio, etc)
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • This is a full-time, temporary position with employment dates of August 19 through November 22, 2013.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
