POSITION SUMMARY
The Gulf of Mexico Restoration Program Coordinator oversees activities related to the science and management of restoration projects for The Nature Conservancy's Gulf of Mexico Program. The Nature Conservancy has been active in the Gulf for more than 30 years and is committed to the long-term restoration of the Gulf's lands, waters and communities. Today, the Conservancy is focusing significant resources on restoring the Gulf's natural systems, including marshes, oyster reefs and coastal forests, to protect people, property and infrastructure, and to provide a foundation for lasting environmental and economic innovation, health, prosperity and resilience. The Restoration Program Coordinator will provide science and technical support and advice to Conservancy field staff working on restoration projects, synthesize and disseminate information about best practices and lessons-learned from restoration projects and other research projects, develop and help carry out Gulf-wide monitoring protocols for TNC restoration projects, and support the development of government relations, communication and outreach plans about the complete body of restoration work in the Gulf of Mexico. S/He will work cooperatively with the Gulf of Mexico staff and state field staff, as well as the Global Marine Team staff and North American staff, to support on-the-ground restoration in the region.  The Restoration Program Coordinator will assist with private and public fundraising activities. S/He is supervised by the Gulf of Mexico Program Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Gulf of Mexico Restoration Program Coordinator oversees activities related to the science and management of restoration projects for The Nature Conservancy's Gulf of Mexico Program. S/He serves as a principle point of contact to Conservancy state chapters, and serves as a liaison to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community for the Gulf Program's restoration activities.  This includes the following functions:
  • Establishing the Conservancy as a major restoration partner in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Providing science and technical guidance and support to Conservancy field staff.
  • Coordination with marine program managers, field staff, and research scientists to ensure consistency in scientific method, coastal resilience principles, restoration monitoring protocols and other key aspects of restoration projects.
  • Assisting with the development of key partnerships with public and private organizations and corporations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices in restoration.
  • Development of innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address restoration needs in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Support implementation of Gulf of Mexico conservation and restoration strategies.
  • Assisting with development and dissemination of marketing and media materials.
  • Supporting government relations staff with communication and translation of complex scientific information.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • BA/BS degree and a minimum 5 years of experience in marine and coastal conservation and restoration or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience managing complex marine and coastal restoration projects, including staffing, workloads, contracts and finances under deadlines.
  • Experience with current science, theory and techniques and tools commonly associated with coastal restoration and management. Experience in developing and implementing monitoring plans for coastal restoration sites or projects.
  • Experience with written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 5-7 years of experience in marine and coastal restoration and conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation and restoration projects.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in marine and coastal restoration in North America, with a specific focus on the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes.
  • Demonstrated experience motivating team members, setting goals, and leading efforts.
  • Knowledge of Gulf of Mexico politics and society with respect to the environment and restoration.
  • Demonstrated experience managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering clearly written, spoken, and graphic communications.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant writing and public and private fundraising.
  • Demonstrated experience working with and leading multi-disciplinary teams, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance in a non-hierarchical environment.
  • Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc); political savvy.
  • Proven interpersonal and negotiation skills.
