ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Working closely with the Chief External Affairs Officer (CEAO), the Director, Strategic & Business Planning provides leadership to the division in the areas of strategic and organizational planning, financial analysis and management, division operations and management/administration.  The Director, Strategic & Business Planning plays a leading role in the development of a division-wide strategic agenda reflecting organizational priorities.  S/he has a lead role in the financial management of division and oversees administrative functions within the division including compliance, human resources, philanthropy and technology and information systems, liaising with those corporate functional areas as required.  The Director, Strategic & Business Planning is the lead staffer for the External Affairs Division’s Management Team.  S/he must maintain confidentiality of privileged information and exhibit the highest level of personal integrity and professional judgment as a key advisor to the CEAO and division leadership.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Director leads the strategic planning process for the highest priority division initiatives, including the Investing in Natural Infrastructure Initiative, Addressing Climate and Energy Initiative, and similar high priority initiatives for which the division is accountable.  S/he works closely with the CEAO and division leadership in developing goals and priorities flowing from the strategic planning process and ensures a unified understanding of and progress toward those goals and priorities by the division’s senior leadership and across the organization.  S/he meets individually as needed or as directed by the CEAO with members of the External Affairs Management Team and others to monitor progress toward and attainment of assigned goals and activities.   Working closely with division leadership, s/he ensures the coordination of division initiatives with TNC’s global strategy teams to enable effective alignment.
  • Leads and coordinates the annual business planning process across the division.  Provides expert guidance to the leadership team on TNC business planning processes, tools and outcomes.
  • Strategizes with the CEAO and division leadership on institutional planning, policy development, and problem resolution; ensures implementation plans are effectively communicated and managed.
  • Supports division leadership in managing division interactions with the Board of Directors, particularly the Government Relations Committee, Conservation Committee and board reviews of corporate engagement.
  • Liaises with key Philanthropy staff to assist in translating division strategies and initiatives into effective fundraising plans.
  • Leads, launches and/or coordinates special projects on behalf of the division; ensures effective project management and tracking for the highest priority division initiatives; provides project review and oversight.
  • As needed, oversees the work of high level consultants and contractors;
  • Leads development of TNC’s global external affairs community (both field- and Worldwide Office-based) by playing a lead role in organizing periodic All-External Affairs Meetings and other community-building approaches.
  • Leads the annual budgeting process.  Advises the CEAO and leadership on division financial management.  Responsible for overall financial analysis, reporting of results against plan, and recommending course corrections.  Responsible for long-range financial planning.  Oversight and supervision of one finance support staff.
  • Anticipates and identifies issues for discussion at key management meetings; identifies appropriate meeting participants; works with appropriate departments to prepare and/or manage the preparation of reports, briefings, presentations, and responses on institutional and strategic issues, as necessary.  Leads efforts to strengthen management processes division-wide. 
  • Responsible for implementation and oversight of all major human resources activities for the division (e.g. staff professional development, succession planning, leadership development activities, etc.).  Leads the management team in the annual workforce and organizational planning process.  Leads and/or coordinates the recruitment of key senior staff on behalf of the CEAO.  As needed, identifies, recruits and manages the staff resources needed to implement key projects.  Oversight and supervision of one HR and Operations support staff.
  • Additionally, the Director provides leadership to the division in the following functional areas: Compliance, Facilities/Space Planning, and Technology and Information Systems.  The director liaises regularly with subject matter experts within these functional areas to meet the division’s needs in these areas.

The Director, Strategic & Business Planning must be willing to take on additional management responsibilities as needed.  The Director reports to the Chief External Affairs Officer.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 7 years relevant experience, including working at a senior level.
  • Experience planning and developing annual budgets and monitoring results.
  • Strategic planning experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives, and manage performance of a multi-disciplinary team.  Keeps staff informed and expresses appreciation.  Ability to influence and work effectively with senior staff over which there is no direct supervisory authority. 
  • Proven managerial talent in budgeting, staffing, and performance management.  Delegates responsibility and authority to staff and clearly defines expectations.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Well organized and self-directed.  Demonstrated project management skills.  Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven technical skills, strong analytical ability, good judgment, and strong strategic and operational focus.
