POSITION SUMMARY
The position, located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area, offers the opportunity to join the staff of one of the largest, most successful conservation organizations in the world. The Nature Conservancy's global success can be measured by the protection of 117 million acres in over 30 countries and the $1.7 billion raised in our four-year Campaign completed in 2011 to coincide with our 60th anniversary. The Pennsylvania Chapter is known in the Conservancy and beyond as a leader in innovative, effective strategies that benefit both people and nature at a scale that matters.  Our past successes include protecting over 80,000 acres of key habitat and helping to restore natural, healthy flows to Pennsylvania's three great river systems.  The Director of Philanthropy will join a dynamic, ambitious, and valued staff, and will play a key role in achieving the Chapter's goal to protect the lands and waters of Pennsylvania, the region, and the world for future generations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Philanthropy leads the Pennsylvania staff of The Nature Conservancy in planning and implementing a comprehensive development program that secures significant philanthropic resources from Pennsylvania individuals, foundations, and corporations to support the Conservancy's conservation priorities within Pennsylvania and around the world.  S/he is charged with:
  • Leading statewide philanthropy efforts to raise in excess of $2.5 million annually in support of The Nature Conservancy's statewide, regional and global conservation priorities. 
  • Leading a five-year initiative to increase major giving in the Pennsylvania Chapter and raise an additional $25M.
  • Serving on the Pennsylvania senior management team to develop fundraising goals for the Chapter, for which s/he is accountable.
  • Working closely with the State Director, the senior management team, the Pennsylvania Board Chair and Fundraising Committee Chair to strengthen and engage the state Board of Trustees in fundraising.

To achieve these objectives, the Director of Philanthropy oversees the planning and implementation of a comprehensive statewide philanthropy program aimed at securing significant financial resources from individuals, foundations and corporations within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to support state, regional and global conservation goals. The Director works with Pennsylvania senior and philanthropy staff to develop a statewide philanthropy vision and multi-year fundraising goals, and provides the leadership to achieve these statewide goals. S/he encourages collaborative state and organization-wide philanthropy efforts, communicates a broad vision and focuses on highest return activities aimed at achieving long-range strategic priorities that advance the Conservancy's global mission.

The Director of Philanthropy has management responsibility for the 7-person Pennsylvania philanthropy team, which encompasses major and principal gifts functions, planned giving, donor prospecting and research, and an ambitious five-year strategic fundraising initiative.  S/he hires, manages, and establishes fundraising goals for Pennsylvania-based Associate Directors of Philanthropy to meet Conservancy fundraising goals for the state.  S/he also works with leadership and philanthropy staff in the region as well as with Conservancy philanthropy staff organization-wide to maximize major and principal gifts revenue.

The Director of Philanthropy plays a leadership role in motivating and coordinating the multi-disciplinary Pennsylvania staff and volunteer leaders in collaborative fundraising efforts, including major and principal gift donor strategy development, cultivation and solicitation. S/he is directly responsible for managing a select group of principal and major donor prospects.  The Director of Philanthropy understands and complies with all Conservancy gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

  • The capacity to effectively communicate the Conservancy's mission and its relevance to the health of our environment and the well-being of human communities.
  • Enthusiasm for nature, wildlife and the outdoors.
  • Proven ability to use strong strategic thinking skills to create a vision for, plan and lead an aggressive and comprehensive fundraising program.
  • Successful experience developing and leading Trustees and other volunteer fundraisers in effective major gift fundraising.
  • Considerable knowledge of and experience working in the Pennsylvania philanthropic community.
  • A personal enthusiasm and successful experience working with donors and raising six and seven figure gifts.
  • Broad experience leading teams and individuals, managing projects virtually, and collaborating with and influencing staff s/he does not directly supervise. Experience, sincere interest and pleasure in developing fundraising talent in professional staff and volunteers.
  • Experience working for a national, global and/or highly decentralized organization.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications or related field and at least 7 years' fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing and supervising a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Experience with current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.
  • Experience in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in the basics of charitable gift planning.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Extensive management experience including ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance of a large multi-disciplinary team.  Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation and capital campaigns.
  • Proven success in asking for and closing major gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Possesses a working and effective understanding of the basics of charitable gift planning. Knowledge of more advanced gift planning concepts a plus.
  • Superb communication and presentation skills.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
