ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Finance (DoF) is responsible for the management and reporting of all finances, both operating and capital funds, for the Louisiana Chapter to assure all financial functions are performed efficiently and effectively. S/he will serve on the chapter's staff leadership team and be responsible for advising the State Director and providing recommendations related to finances in the overall organizational planning and policy development for the chapter. S/he will be accountable to the State Director andthe Board of Trustees for developing long-term financial plans, overseeing implementation of those plans and recommending chapter investments and expenditures based on overall chapter objectives. S/he will coordinate with and respond to requests from central financial staff, including the Regional Finance Analyst and staff in the office of the Chief Financial Officer. Specific responsibilities include development of the overall financial plan, management of chapter's annual budget process, cash management to assure most efficient use of funds and retirement of debt, high-level grants and contract management, financial reporting and management of chapter reserves, including facility and equipment reserves.   The DoF will oversee contract management and will provide back up as volume dictates.      

The DoF will work with conservation directors to help track project/grant fund balances and reporting schedules, assist in tracking available matching funds and with general proposal/budget development. The DoF must be able to resolve complex issues independently within the program area, cultivate the creative ideas of others, and be willing to experiment to find creative solutions.  S/he will act as a resource to help others to solve problems.  S/he should make sound decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment.  S/he will provide a leadership role in integrating financial management to support conservation objectives.

DUTIES
  • Provide strategic direction on finances - e.g. developing recommendations for financial decisions, developing multi-year financial plans and overseeing their implementation, developing options for reducing interest payments on debt load.
  • Proactive management of funds (cleaning up small negative balances, investigating use of funds that are sitting in land centers and/or are available for grant match, moving funds to retire debt, etc.).
  • Work closely and creatively with chapter staff, especially philanthropy and protection, to implement financial plans, advise and discuss financial strategies and provide information and materials needed.
  • Translate complicated finances into lay terms.
  • Prepare memos explaining finances for staff leadership and trustees.
  • Work with state director to communicate financial matters with board members.
  • Train and orient new trustees on TNC finances.
  • Prepare complete and thorough financial and narrative materials for treasurer for briefings to executive committee and full board meetings on current and projected operations and capital funds and debt.
  • Review and approve check requests.
  • Prepare financials for Annual Reports.
  • Prepare and coordinate information for proposals for philanthropy and financials for reporting back on institutional gifts.
  • Manage annual budgeting process including meetings with program managers; entering data into templates, budget reports for trustees, detailed spreadsheets for state director, meetings to balance the budget, reporting budget back to program managers.
  • Special projects as assigned - such as trend analysis for Board of Trustees, information for chapter equipment reserves, financial information for strategic plan.
  • Ensures the chapter complies with TNC financial policies and procedures and external (legal/IRS) requirements.
  • Oversee contract management and provide back up as volume dictates.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in finance/accounting and 5 years related experience or equivalent combination.
  • Experience working with GAAP and fund accounting principles, practices and regulations.
  • Technical experience with accounting/financial issues.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Technical expert on complex accounting/financial issues.
  • Solid knowledge and experience using and maintaining automated computer systems.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills, accuracy, attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
  • Design, implement, and direct multiple projects, setting deadlines and ensuring program accountability.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Consistently demonstrate professional, positive, and approachable attitude/demeanor and discretion. Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work well as leader or member of a team.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
