Summary:
Ethics Investigator for Corporate Ethics and Compliance Department. This position requires approximately 40% travel, both international and domestic.

The Investigator will be responsible for the investigation of allegations involving possible violations of Bechtel's Code of Conduct, violations of law, violations of Bechtel policies and standards of conduct. This investigation responsibility will extend to all lines of business, as well as to all levels of employees up to and including senior executives.

Job Dimensions:
  • The Ethics Investigator reports to and receives operational guidance from the Chief Ethics and Compliance Investigator.
  • Additional guidance with respect to special investigations is provided by the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer and the Legal Department as necessary.
  • This position provides guidance or coordinates the activities of auditors, investigators and/or other personnel in the conduct of special investigations as required.
Contacts:
The individual must be capable of operating effectively at a senior level with significant interaction with the General Counsel, Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer, Chief Financial Officer, and the Audit Committee of the board of directors. The position:

  • Maintains contacts with Bechtel senior management to facilitate effective working relationship with respect to ethics and compliance investigations and corrective actions.
  • Maintains active communication with individuals in Bechtel outside of Ethics and Compliance who have expertise in functional areas associated with fraud audits so that they may be called upon for technical advice during a special investigation.
  • Works closely with members of many different groups in business units throughout the company, including Ethics and Compliance, the Legal Department, HR, Internal Audit, IS&T, External Affairs, Finance and Security.
Essential Job Duties:
Working independently and with limited supervision, but subject to input and direction by the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer:

  • Gathering of facts on issues in question through interviewing and statement taking of employees and other relevant witnesses.
  • Preparing objective and concise written reports of investigations.
  • Obtaining physical and documentary evidence to support investigations, including electronic evidence.
  • Documenting investigation workflow and activities in Ethics and Compliance organization database.
  • Testifying and presenting evidence at administrative and criminal court proceedings as required.
  • Complying with all applicable regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Working closely with other investigators, including members of the Compliance staff, HR, Legal Department, Internal Audit, Finance and Security.
Requirements:
  • Strong analytical skills, decision making, problem solving, oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize a large and complex case load with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated abilities in time management and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to organize data and write concise investigative reports.
  • Working knowledge of criminal and civil justice systems.
  • Ability to use various computer systems to include but not limited to; Word, Excel, Outlook, and various database search systems.
  • Must possess a valid passport.
  • Willingness to travel on short notice, possibly including overnight stays for extended periods of time.
  • Must be comfortable working with all levels of employee base. In fact, this position will be responsible for interviewing even senior executives on sometimes difficult or sensitive issues.
  • Must be highly credible and not afraid to express his or her opinions.
Education/Training:
  • BA or BS Undergraduate degree required.
  • MBA, JD or other relevant advanced degree and case management experience preferred.
  • Current or previous investigative experience in law enforcement, U.S. Department of Justice, or a U.S. State agency would be a plus.
  • Experience in Engineering and Construction industry is desirable.
  • Preferred: Fluent in Spanish, French and/or Arabic
