Job Description:  CH2M HILL - Geotechnical and Tunnel Engineer Jobs - Sacramento, California
The challenge? Help our clients provide and sustain clean water resources around the world. As a Geotechnical and Tunnel Engineer you will be responsible for developing and implementing field exploration and laboratory testing programs, conducting geotechnical and numerical analyses, preparing geotechnical data, design, and baseline reports, and developing earthwork-, tunnel-, trenchless-, and foundation-related project specifications. Each day, you will have the opportunity to follow projects from concept through the construction phase with our office geotechnical and tunnel engineers and to work on current and upcoming design-build projects.
You should be a self-motivated professional with a successful track record of 0-7 years in Geotechnical or Tunnel Engineering as well as posses a MS in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering with an emphasis in Geotechnical or Tunnel Engineering. Candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong technical knowledge of the principles of soil and rock mechanics. Your experience with design assignments in foundation engineering, soil mechanics, pipe jacking and tunneling, earth retaining structures, seismic will contribute to your success. You should have experience with large design and construction projects as well as field soil classification, an EIT or PE, and the desire to grow personally as well as professionally with each geotechnical and tunnel engineering job.
Our Geotechnical and Tunnel Engineers:
- Participate in field assignments that will include observation of explorations (soil and rock borings, test pits, CPT probes, geophysical testing) and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring; and inspection of earth retaining structures, deep foundations (drilled shafts, piles), tunnels and pipe jacking, and shallow foundations.
- Design foundations, earth retaining structures, ground improvement, embankment and cut slopes, and both soft and hard rock tunnels.
- Perform earthquake hazard evaluations, including site-specific site response analysis and liquefaction potential analysis.
- Analyze laboratory testing results and select geotechnical design parameters.
- Prepare and review technical reports, data reports and baseline reports.
- Use computer programs including Settle3D, LPILE, Unwedge, DeepXcav, Phases, Plaxis, and FLAC to complete engineering analysis and prepare design calculations.
- Prepare design drawings and construction specifications.
- Work in collaborative multi-disciplinary teams across North America and the world.
- Share technical knowledge across geographical boundaries to foster innovative project solutions.
- Possess an outgoing and positive attitude, are dependable and meet all assigned project deadlines.
- Display strong communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with multiple deadlines.
- Drive ownership of health & safety in all aspects of project execution, office and personal environments.
Additional Information: Relocation assistance is not available for this position. CH2M HILL will not sponsor an employment visa (e.g., H-1B visa, etc) to fill this position.

Basic Qualifications

- M.S. in Civil Engineering or Geological Engineering with an emphasis on Geotechnical Engineering or Tunnel Engineering.

- Ability to communicate technical information to nontechnical audiences in both written and verbal formats.

- Engineer-In-Training certificate.

Preferred Qualifications

- California PE license or the ability to obtain within 3 years of hire date.

- A minimum of 4 years of geotechnical experience with transportation, water, environmental or energy facilities.

- Tunneling and trenchless design experience.

- Seismic design awareness (via previous practice or advanced education).
