Job Description:

Operators are responsible for assessing all incoming traffic data and determining, in real-time, the content and priority of traffic reporting. They are the primary point of contact for incident management coordination. Operators provide information to the traveling public related to current travel conditions, maintain traffic interruption reports and manage incidents on the state roadways from the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Statewide Transportation Operations Center (STOC) Control Room.
Operators assess large volumes of data (both static and real-time) from a wide variety of sources to detect possible roadway incidents. Operators monitor the ATMS, check road sensor data and confirm the data using closed-circuit television (CCTV) video. Effective communication is an important part of this process as Operators maintain telephone and/or radio communications with Field Technicians, 911 Emergency Operators and public service agencies. Once assessment is complete, Operators determine the facts and severity of traffic incidents and prepare the information for dissemination to the motoring public.
In addition, Operators are responsible for the maintenance, quality, accuracy and timeliness of all information disseminated, including Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and fax/notification messages.
Operators will be required to work weekend, major holiday and overnight shifts as typically assigned.

Specific duties and responsibilities of all Operators include, but are not limited to:

• Disseminate traffic information through multiple communication methods, including telephone, fax, E-mail and instant messaging
• Communicate with Michigan State Police, MDOT personnel, regional contacts, and other public safety agencies across the state
• Send incident notifications in real time and follow up notifications regarding incident updates and clearance
• Log all communication into computer software

• Coordinate Lane/Ramp Closure Requests from Inside/Outside Customers
• Estimate traffic delays due to incidents and routine congestion
• Review and verification of traveler information posted on MDOT public Web site and reported by media outlets
