Cell Engineering Technician

The Role

This technician will assist cell engineering efforts to further the understanding of cell degradation, cell performance and cell safety characteristics at the electrode level. The candidate will benchmark and quantify differences in fresh versus aged batteries to identify root causes of degradation.
Responsibilities
  • Perform cell level destructive physical analysis (DPA) and other analytical techniques to analyze mechanisms of energy and power loss in lithium ion chemistries.
  • Build coin cells and pouch cell to evaluate cell performance.
  • Execution and maintenance of lithium ion cell tests using cell cycle equipment (e.g. Arbin or Maccor), temperature/humidity chambers and chillers.
  • Write test plans, propose design of experiments and summarize results in test reports.
  • Design and build fixturing for battery testing.
  • Use data manipulation skills and data visualization techniques to convey test results to cell engineers.
  • Be a member of a cross functional product development team to help determine the ideal cell chemistry and design for electric vehicle applications.

Requirements
  • Experience working in a glove box environment.
  • Hands-on lithium ion battery cell testing. Understanding of lithium ion cell safety and its inherent dangers.
  • Familiar with analytical equipment used in analyzing battery electrodes (SEM, XRD, TEM, EIS, GC-MS, etc)
  • Experience working with multiple Li-ion cell chemistries including LCO, LMO, NCA, FePO4
  • Familiar with the degradation mechanisms in lithium ion batteries is a plus but not required.
  • Above average manual dexterity and average visual acuity are required in order to perform delicate assembly tasks.
  • Previous use of ARBIN or MACCOR equipment or similar electrical battery test equipment is a plus
  • Experience soldering and crimping.
  • Familiar with calibration and maintenance of test equipment.
  • Working knowledge of Excel and Powerpoint
