ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Nature Conservancy seeks a Climate Adaptation Coordinator to support the Magdalena River Project. This project will strive to ensure the long-term viability of the river basin by reducing major threats to the biodiversity of the Magdalena River and its tributaries, coordinating effort with a team of TNC staff from the Northern Andes Southern Central America (NASCA) Conservation Program and its strategies (Productive Landscapes, Protected Areas, Infrastructure, Water Funds and Indigenous Lands) to work with key internal and external partners to define a vision that unites TNC, the Government of Colombia and other national/local partners into a larger landscape conservation area.

In Climate change, the aim of the project is to provide the Colombian government with a planning framework and tools to design and implement a cost-effective, climate-resilient basin-scale management plan for the Magdalena River Basin in order to reduce flood risks and provide for economic growth while sustaining a healthy river and accounting for climate changes.

The Climate adaptation Coordinator will support the work with National and Regional environmental agencies to coordinate actions that address threats at the appropriate scale along the Magdalena River Basin, from its headwaters in Southern Colombia to the Colombian Caribbean Sea. Additional duties will be to provide support in preparing projects, reports, meetings and workshops with various collaborators and stakeholders, which also includes logistical aspects. The Climate adaptation Coordinator will provide scientific and technical support for additional opportunities that arise for promoting the sustainable management and conservation of biodiversity in the Magdalena River Basin. This position will be supervised by the Magdalena Project Coordinator for the NASCA Conservation Program and will be based in the Bogota Office in Colombia.

The Climate adaptation Coordinator serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community.  This may include one or more of the following functions:

•         Establishes the Conservancy as a major conservation partner in Climate adaptation within the Magdalena Basin

•         Defines conservation priorities

•         Leads and manages team which supports and improves conservation efforts

•         Builds strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field

•         Develops key partnerships with public and private organizations in order to identify and resolve technical issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices

•         Develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the natural system needs

•         Engages local community support for local conservation efforts

•         Negotiates complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities

•         Develops and implements conservation strategies
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
•         BA/BS degree and at least 5 years experience in conservation practice and ecosystem-based adaptation to climate variability or equivalent combination of education and experience.

•         Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads, and finances under deadlines.

•         Experience in written and verbal communication.

•         Supervisory experience.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

•         Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing conservation policy and plans in climate change

•         Knowledge of current trends and practices in relevant discipline(s) and regions

•         Developing practical applications of scientific concepts and technical innovations for conservation purposes

•         Knowledge of methods and standards of biodiversity information systems and initiatives

•         Motivating team members, setting goals, and leading efforts 

•         Knowledge of politics and society with respect to environmental and climate change affairs

•         Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results

•         Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English

•         Successful experience in developing, directing and managing multiple projects.

•         Demonstrated supervisory experience, including the ability to motivate, lead, set objectives and manage performance.

•         Successful experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc); political savvy.

•         Proven interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
