ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Associate Director of Philanthropy bears responsibility for engagement, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of portfolios of 75 - 125 current and prospective donors with capacity of $100,000 + to support emerging state-based, regional and global priorities for conservation and prepare the Virginia Chapter for significant contribution to an upcoming organization-wide campaign.  In the context of sophisticated wealth analysis of the Conservancy's database, the Associate Director of Philanthropy will play a central role in qualifying and engaging prospective donors of $100,000 +.  To that end, s/he must be experienced in designing and executing strategies to bring a donor from membership to a gift at capacity, with demonstrated success in developing substantive donor relationships, creating high end networks in a major market and at engaging and supporting natural partners in executing donor strategy. 

Additionally, s/he must be able to work in collaboration with state-based scientists and other conservation experts as well as across a large, dispersed and complex organization. Understands and complies with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals. 

Finally, s/he must be curious and self-motivated to learn domestic and global conservation strategies and become adept at linking the two.  A demonstrable commitment to conservation will be a distinct advantage.    

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assume a portfolio of 75 - 100 current and prospective donors of $100,000 + whose current relationship with The Nature Conservancy spans the full range of commitment from loyal, low dollar membership, new high capacity "suspects" to those with an established pattern of major gifts.
  • Moves manage the major gift portfolio to Conservancy standards for Market Leader states in the major market of Northern Virginia/DC market.
  • Within 2 years, reach capacity to solicit 1/3 of portfolio annually for a meaningful major gift, generating $2M  million plus in new gifts and pledges annually.
  • Qualify and disqualify high capacity "suspects".
  • Design and execute 1-3 year strategies for all qualified donors within the portfolio, identifying and orchestrating engagement of natural partners within and outside of the organization.
  • Collaborate with Philanthropy Manager to ensure solicitation of 80% of portfolio annually for a leadership gift to the Annual Fund.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in business, communications or related field and a minimum of 7 years related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Major gifts fundraising experience required.
  • Experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in current trends in charitable giving in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving.
  • Experience in asking for and closing major gifts of $25,000 or more.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors and corporations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in business, communications or related field and 7-9 years professional development experience (or equivalent combination), with at least 2 of those years in major gift fundraising.  Demonstrated experience designing and closing 6-figure gifts or sales contracts. Demonstrated experience engaging and effectively supporting natural partners from within and outside of the organization.
  • Experience working in a dynamic and complex organization.
  • Entrepreneurial business mindset desired.
  • Knowledge of Northern Virginia philanthropic markets a significant plus.
  • Ability to use existing technology to achieve desired results.
  • Successful experience in managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving, particularly in the areas of capital campaigns, major gifts and planned giving. Working knowledge or ability to learn basics of charitable gift planning.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, and marshal resources. Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to positively influence and persuade.
  • A valid driver's license.

  • Ability to communicate a compelling and inspired vision and sense of core purpose.  Ability to inspire, motivate, and marshal resources throughout the entire organization. Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to positively influence and persuade.

RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT -FINANCIAL & SUPERVISORY
  • Financial responsibility includes setting and meeting fundraising objectives, evaluating results and developing corrective strategies as needed.
  • Develops multi-year fundraising strategies and goals.
  • May supervise other staff.

COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS
  • Strong communication and presentation skills; ability to persuasively convey the mission of TNC to diverse groups including donors, corporate executives, board members and others who are important to the organization's overall prosperity.
  • Ability to work with and communicate with a wide range of people - the public, chapter leadership, influential donors, prospects and others.
  • Ability to educate and inform prospective and existing donors about appropriate giving vehicles.
  • Ability to build constructive and effective relationships with development team.
  • Ability to work effectively in high-tension situations and maintain composure under pressure.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT
  • Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends.
  • Willingness to travel frequently and on short notice.
  • Must have valid driver's license and safe driving record (per TNC's Auto Safety Program), and provide own transportation and personal automobile insurance. (Rental and/or TNC vehicles provided in most cases.)
