POSITION SUMMARY
The Louisiana Chapter is a conservation leader in the state, with 32 employees, $57 millionin assets and an impressive record of conservation success. Through our on-the-ground and in-the-water projects across Louisiana's diverse habitats, and by working cross-border with other chapters and partners on large-scale conservation efforts, we seek innovative solutions that protect critical landscapes and fresh water resources.

The Director of Philanthropy position offers an opportunity for a professional fundraiser at the top of his/her career that can make significant contribution at a global scale. The Director of Philanthropy must possess a significant drive for success that will lead the program to raise $2 million annually in support of state and global conservation priorities.  The Director will manage a high preforming philanthropy team in Louisiana and will be supported by training, prospect research, gift planning expertise, and a host of regional services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Director of Philanthropy (DoP) for Louisiana leads staff in planning and implementing a comprehensive development program that secures significant financial resources from foundations, corporations, or individuals to support the Conservancy's conservation priorities within Louisiana and around the world. Key to success is the DoP's leadership in identifying important connections and areas of influence of Louisiana's philanthropic and community leaders, including the chapter trustees, and effectively engaging them with Conservancy projects. The DoP manages all major gift functions defined as outright and planned gifts and is a key member of the chapter's leadership team. Hires, manages, and establishes fundraising goals for Donor Relations Manager and Major Gifts Manager.  The DoP must have played a significant role in a successful campaign.

DUTIES
  • Works with staff in the Louisiana chapter to develop and implement a multi-year philanthropic vision and plan that aligns with Louisiana's conservation priorities and The Nature Conservancy's Global Challenges / Global Solutions Conservation Framework.
  • Leads, inspires, and manages the Louisiana Philanthropy Team to achieve relationship-building and funding objectives:
  • Sets and meets fundraising objectives, evaluates results and develops effective strategies as needed.
  • Motivates and coordinates the efforts of a multi-disciplinary staff in fundraising, including donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, and nurtures effective team collaboration.
  • Hires, manages, and establishes fundraising goals for the Donor Relations Manager and Major Gifts Manager.
  • Directly manages a portfolio of high-level donors and/or fundraising volunteers.
  • Works closely with the Louisiana Board of Trustees to maximize their role in major and principal gift fundraising, and collaborates with the executive director and trustees in the recruitment and development of new volunteer leaders.
  • Plays a leadership role in shaping the Conservancy's fundraising system to meet the organization's long-term conservation objectives. Actively fosters collaboration between the Worldwide Office and the field and with other field-based fundraising programs to achieve the Conservancy's goals.
  • Understands and complies with all TNC gift-related policies and procedures and ensures ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least 7 years' fundraising experience.
  • Experience managing and supervising a multi-disciplinary team. 
  • Experience with current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation.
  • Experience asking for and closing major gifts.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations, corporations, and Boards.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in major gifts, capital campaigns, planned giving and charitable gift planning. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Strong donor cultivation skills, with demonstrated experience in building successful relationships with major donors.  
  • Knowledge of or strong interest in learning about Louisiana's natural resources, habitats and conservation challenges, particularly as they related to the Louisiana program's priorities.  The ability to effectively communicate these priorities to partners, donors and prospects. 
  • Ability to manage state-level philanthropy program within the context of a larger worldwide organization, with fundraising goals associated with both state and global initiatives.
  • Ability to foster an environment of creativity and professional growth.
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in major gifts giving and solicitation and capital campaigns.
  • Proven success in asking for and closing six-seven figure gifts and building and maintaining long-term relationships with fundraising constituents such as major donors, foundations and corporations.
  • Possesses a working and effective knowledge of the basics of charitable gift planning.
  • Knowledge of more advanced gift planning concepts a plus.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program. Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers." Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.
