ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Summer Stream Barrier - Penobscot Science Assistant will work closely with another crew member, with partners, in remote areas of northern and eastern Maine assessing roads as stream barriers. Tasks include coordinating survey sites, field work logistics, conducting site assessments, data entry and quality control, photo file management, supervision of volunteers, operating GPS equipment, all in a variety of field conditions.

This is a nine week full time seasonal position beginning August 12, 2013.

DUTIES
  • Work in a crew of two, sometimes bringing on volunteers potentially allowing two crews of two or more each
  • Plan and implement stream barrier surveys at road crossings following Maine protocol
  • Map and navigate progress around some remote Maine watershed living in remote locations during shortened work weeks (4) 10-hour days.
  • Perform on-site quality control as well as control checks of your later data entry and management
  • Supervise volunteers including training of field and road safety, survey protocol, data entry
  • Be a positive ambassador for The Nature Conservancy and Maine Audubon working with towns, large private landowners and other natural resource agencies and NGO's

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 1 year's training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Experience recognizing plant and animal species.
  • Experience with GPS units and interpreting mapped information.
  • Experience performing physical work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • 1 - 2 years training in science-related field or related experience in land management. 
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometime under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
  • Knowledge of, and demonstrated experience with, a GPS unit- to find and mark field locations, have experience navigating roads in remote locations. Able to read and interpret road and topographic maps, aerial photos, and other sources of mapped information.
  • Practiced in taking and recording field measurements in diverse field conditions (weather, bugs).
  • Ability to plan field logistics, including potential camp sites, food for small crews.
  • Meticulous with data entry, quality control and management of files.
  • Knowledge and familiarity with Maine geography, natural history, environmental science, preferred.
  • Experience working with volunteers
  • Must hold a valid driver's license and have reliable transportation. 
  • Experience collecting field measurements, entering data, and data analysis.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Access. 

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • This is a full-time, temporary position with employment dates of August 12, 2013 - October 11, 2013.

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
