Minimum Requirements:

• Education: Associates degree in engineering discipline or equivalent experience.
• Experience: 8 years of experience.
• Capability with 2D and/or 3D plant design is strongly recommended.
• Can generate I&C related drawings such as Wiring Diagrams, Schematics, Loop Diagrams, Interconnection Drawings, Installation Details, Logic Drawings and other complex engineering drawings.
• Fully versed in preparation of drawings, layouts and 3D models, and checking, with minimal supervision.
• Has Intermediate knowledge of cost estimating methods and performs thorough and accurate material take-offs for the discipline. Intermediate knowledge of the project change control process, rationale and requirement, and identifies potential changes.
• Has an advanced understanding of logic and process flow diagrams, symbols, control operation and their relationship to instruments and distributed control systems.
• Has an advanced understanding of PLC and DCS Systems.
• Fully understands the process of preparing designs and drawings using project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
• Fully understands the purpose and use of vendor documents and reviews discipline supplier documents for accuracy. Can also review other discipline's supplier documents.
• Fully versed in the process of designing, checking, and inter-discipline review and signing of drawings and documents.

Preferred Requirements:

• Electrical Design experience preferred
• Experience with Hazardous Area Classifications
• North Slope or Arctic Region Experience
• Experience with Compressor Stations
• Working knowledge of MicroStation, PDS, Smartplant 3D, Smartplant Electrical or SmartPlant Intools

URS Corporation is seeking an I&C Lead Designer to be based in our Houston, TX location.

Level Specific Responsibilities:

• Under minimal supervision, develops complex engineering drawings.
• Applies a solid level of understanding within a specific discipline.
• Exercises sound judgment in assessing problem situations or complex design issues, and uses effective approaches for choosing a course of action or developing appropriate solutions.
• Basic understanding of engineer's process of performing and verifying design calculations to support the overall project design.
• Fully understands the purpose and use of vendor documents, reviews them for accuracy and resolves discrepancies. Also reviews discipline supplier documents and other discipline's supplier documents for accuracy.
• Fully understands the use of requisitions and the role of materials management and can review/advise on purchase orders and subcontracts.
• Understands and applies business development concepts and principles, financial terminology and measures, and provides support for proposals.
• Leads or assists with the development of manpower, man-hour, and labor costs requirements for design staff and monitors data to aid in evaluating the budget.
• Intermediate knowledge of cost estimating methods and performs thorough and accurate material take-offs for the discipline.
• Intermediate knowledge of discipline's materials costs and cost analysis and forecasting methods.
• Intermediate knowledge of the project change control process, rationale and requirement, and identifies potential changes.
• Full understanding of the discipline's equipment and material lists and instructs others in their use and requirements. Prepares designs and drawings using project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
• Provides technical guidance and assistance to Designers and Technicians.
• Reviews completed work with design and drafting personnel responsible for its completion to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and design data.
• Advises the Design Supervisor or Supervising Design Engineer (SDE) about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays, and adverse problems.
• Understands and assists with the planning and scheduling of design tasks associated with assigned project.
• Assists in interpreting industry codes, permits, and standards, and ensures design and drawing compliance.
• Understands the role of each of the other disciplines in Engineering.
• Provide supervision to a small group of Designers.
• Review, check and provide comments to Vendor drawings, inter-discipline documents and incorporate changes to I&C related documents.
• Responsible for progress status reporting and performance within approved project scope schedule and budget.
• Reviews completed work with design and drafting personnel responsible for its completion to ensure accuracy and compliance with codes and design data.
• Advises the Design Supervisor or Supervising Discipline Engineer (SDE) about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays, and adverse problems. Understands and assists with the planning and scheduling of design tasks associated with assigned project.
• Proficient supporting FEL I, FEL II, FEL III and Execute activities.
• Understands codes, permits, and software applications related to the electrical deliverables.
• Fully understands the use of requisitions and the role of materials management, and can review/advise on purchase orders and subcontracts.
• Basic knowledge of the project change control process and can identify a potential change.
• May provide technical guidance to less experienced design staff.
• Creates and maintains positive working relationships with peer leaders and project team.
• Creates and maintains productive relationships with organizations both within and external to Engineering.
• Position will have direct interface with clients.
• Keeps proper files and records related to assigned design activities.
• Interprets industry codes, permits, and standards and assumes responsibility for ensuring design and drawings compliance.
• Understands the role of each of the other disciplines in engineering.
• Acts with integrity in all elements of responsibility.
• Fully understands the I&C equipment and material lists.
• Familiar with AutoCAD and/or Micro Station.
• Advanced understanding of local, state and industry codes and recommendations; NEC, ISA, NFPA, UL, etc.
• Assist clients and fabricators during construction, and train designers and junior designers.
