Description:

We seek a highly motivated engineer for a senior position in our Stamping Manufacturing Engineering group. This group is responsible for developing and implementing the processes, equipment and tooling used to produce our advanced, high performance aluminum stampings. These stampings push the limit of traditionally accepted manufacturing capability and are a critical component of the overall quality and structural performance of our advance body structure. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to building a world class manufacturing facility right here in the Bay Area. Tesla is a demanding and fast-paced environment where you will work on a critical subsystem of an incredibly exciting product.
The Manufacturing Engineering team employs a combination of team-based and matrix-based organizational structure. Leadership is responsible for either product lines or specific functions within the team. The ideal Staff Manufacturing Engineer candidate takes pride in his/her own work and that of those under his/her formal or informal guidance. Analytical ability, organizational skills and great attention to detail are of paramount importance. Roles and Responsibilities:

Our Stamping Manufacturing Engineering Manager will begin with a group of existing engineers and lead this cohesive team within Vehicle Manufacturing Engineering. He/She will be responsible developing the processes and requirements to implement new products and/or in-house manufacturing capacity and then leading the team to execute these projects. He/She will also be responsible for providing design for manufacturing and formability feedback to our vehicle design engineers in order to realize superior design efficiency and panel dimensional accuracy. The deliverable for this position is the handover to day-to-day production of capable and stable manufacturing processes, equipment and tooling. The successful candidate should be a skilled and experienced engineer and manager with a successful track record of organizing and growing engineering teams.
Process Development and Implementation
  • Ensure product designs are feasible for manufacturing including production efficiency, formability and built-in quality capability
  • Performance of process analysis including PFMEA, capacity modeling and line balancing
  • Development of new manufacturing processes
  • Performance of manufacturing process and equipment comparative analysis
  • Performance of production tooling home line commissioning

Equipment Development and Implementation:
  • Ability to create equipment capability requirements
  • In-house development of manufacturing equipment, fixtures, tools, etc. to support early stage prototype builds
  • Specification development of manufacturing equipment for medium- and high-volume production
  • Management of internal project responsibilities for new equipment including equipment vendor selection and meeting timing/budget requirements
  • Management of suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and installation of manufacturing equipment
  • Characterization and validation of new equipment and fixtures for introduction to the production floor

Tooling Development and Implementation:
  • Ability to create production tooling specifications based on released design and in-house production equipment
  • Prepare new product internal sourcing costing to support make vs. buy selection
  • Develop procedures for the buy-off of production tooling at supplier's site
  • Management of suppliers during specification, design, buyoff and commissioning of production tooling
  • Ability to work with internal Tool & Die team on the sourcing and/or modification of production tooling to support new products

Skills and Experience:
  • Proficiency in the following:
    • designing and costing mechanical equipment, fixturing, tooling and facilities
    • creating technical specifications for automated manufacturing equipment
    • utilizing overall project management tools including detailed schedules and budgeting
    • transitioning products from prototype to production desired
    • utilizing statistical process control (SPC)
  • Experience in the following:
    • all press sheet metal forming processes (blanking, laser, stamping, hydro forming, surface repair, etc.)
    • generating detailed drawings from solid models for various fabrication techniques (CNC/manual machining, sheet metal forming, etc.)
    • aluminum alloys and metallurgy
    • introducing new products and new processes into a production environment
    • designing for manufacturability
    • interfacing with manufacturing execution system software (MES)
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment with multiple priorities
  • Previous experience in role leading multiple groups of professionals
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
  • Solidly organized, with meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience in 3D parametric CAD (e.g. SolidWorks, Catia) and 2D layout software (e.g. AutoCAD)
  • Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio

Qualifications:
  • BS/MS Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
  • 10+ years of combined career experience as a leader of engineers, as a manager of engineering projects, and as a hands-on industrial/manufacturing/process engineer working on stamping manufacturing processes and/or equipment.
