OFFICE LOCATION Christiansted, Virgin Islands ABOUT US The Nature Conservancy is the leading conservation organization working to make a positive impact around the world in more than 30 countries, all 50 United States, and your backyard. Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Visit www.nature.org/aboutus to learn more. TNC POSITION SUMMARY The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has supported the conservation of endangered and threatened sea turtles on the east end of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. Since 1994, three pocket beaches on the east end of St. Croix have been monitored for both green and hawksbill sea turtle nesting activity. The project is currently seeking three, full-time volunteers to work the 2013 nesting season from August 12, 2013 - December 13, 2013. The Volunteer Associate will monitor Jack, Isaac, and East End beaches at night for nesting turtles. Volunteers will be supervised by the Principal Investigator. The beaches are remote and project housing is 45 minutes away by car. Access into the beaches is by foot only and the trails are steep and rocky. The patrol areas are separated by rocky headlands and radio communication between them is limited. Applicants must be able to walk long distances over difficult terrain while being comfortable working on their own in these remote areas. The public is not barred from the area at night so volunteers must regularly work around unannounced visitors. The project expects to work with approximately 75-100+ green turtles and 30+ hawksbills. The beaches range in length with the longest foot patrol taking 15 minutes. Applicants with previous sea turtle experience including flipper tagging, PIT tagging, basic data collection, and nest excavation will be given preference during the selection process.
