ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Fire Management Technician participates in fire operations which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, etc.  All TNC staff actively participating on a prescribed burn must be qualified as a FFT2. S/he will participate in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring and other tasks.  S/he may also perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire such as, but not limited to, fencing, boundary posting, thinning, and woody vegetation removal.  This position requires long and irregular hours, cooking and sleeping under rustic conditions, with extensive outdoor physical labor under adverse conditions. 

As part of the incumbent's ongoing professional development, he/she will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials.  In addition, s/he shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in fire activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience
  • Qualified as Fire Fighter Type 2.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma and 6 months -1 year of related experience
  • Qualified as or able to meet qualifications for Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fireline (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2.  See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm
  • Ability to operate various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (such as 4X4 pickups, trailers, ATVs, chainsaws and other power and hand tools, etc.).
  • Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather
  • Ability to achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager
  • First Aid/ CPR certification preferred but not required.  Ability to certify after start date required.
  • Ability to get along with others under any potential conditions.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • Position term is through April 30, 2014.
  • Two to three week break (unpaid except for official holidays) during Christmas and New Years holidays.
  • Rent-free housing (may be responsible for sharing utility costs).

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

The Fire Management Technician may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

These conditions:
  • require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present frequent possibility of injury
  • require long hours in isolated settings
  • require the ability to live with and work with a variety of people in stressful conditions
  • require a willingness and ability to cook and sleep outdoors in all weather conditions for up to ten days at a time. Must provide own sleeping bag and tent.
