ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Multi-objective marine spatial planning (MSP) is central to TNC's objective to improve the management of the Ocean. TNC is already doing much to advance MSP both in the US and in a number of its international programs. The Marine Spatial Planning Scientist, as a part of the Global Marine Team (GMT) will strengthen, accelerate, and leverage TNC's conservation work in this area by providing technical and programmatic leadership and support for TNC's multi-objective marine spatial planning initiatives that are implemented through TNC's field programs. The MSP Scientist will report to the Priority Lead for Integrated Ocean Management and work closely with other colleagues on the GMT, External Affairs (both International and U.S. Government Relations departments), other relevant cross-cutting teams, conservation regions and Operating Units (OUs) to advance multi-objective planning that enables both conservation and sustainable development. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Identify large-scale sites where TNC is currently engaged where MSP is needed to help resolve potential conflicts between existing and proposed new uses and conservation
  • Working with GMT colleagues and 2 to 3 regional/country teams develop and implement MSP projects that:
    • Persuasively make the case for application of MSP and help develop political will at national level to launch a MSP process
    • Develop within region coalitions to advance MSP and the legal/regulatory frameworks to enable successful implementation
    • Develop scientifically sound marine spatial plans that are well supported by stakeholders and result in both enhanced protection and better sited sustainable development
  • Develop resources and grow capacity to support a TNC Marine Spatial Planning Community of Practice (Cop)
    • With support from Knowledge Management colleagues, develop on-line resources for TNC practitioners
    • Facilitate learning exchanges among TNC MSP projects
  • Support the development of partnerships and enabling conditions favorable for MSP
    • Collaborate with GMT Policy Advisers to strengthen the MSP agenda under the Convention on Biological Diversity and develop and implement other strategies for enhancing enabling conditions (including policy and public funding) that advance MSP
    • Develop and implement a strategy for TNC engagement with the growing MSP practitioner community to both contribute and help TNC practitioners benefit from the rapidly growing body of MSP experience
  • Lead and contribute to development of fundraising proposals to expand capacity and resources for MSP
  • Participate in professional venues and be a spokesperson for TNC's MSP work

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in marine science or management field and 6 years of experience in marine planning and management; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in executing a major program of strategic importance and relevance to marine spatial planning, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience developing marine plans, policy briefs and/or peer-reviewed publications relating to marine spatial planning
  • Experience working with / utilizing decision support tools in reference to marine spatial planning.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and collaborators.
  • Experience fundraising and/or writing grants and proposals.
  • Experience establishing and managing relationships and complex partnerships, and collaborating with outside partners, state/local/federal agencies, international organizations and the academic community.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in marine science or management field and 6 years of experience in marine planning and management; PhD and 3-5 years related experience preferred
  • Expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in MSP, relevant discipline(s) and regions.
  • Experience in executing a major program of strategic importance and relevance to marine spatial planning, including management/supervision of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Record of marine plans, policy briefs and/or peer-reviewed publications relating to marine spatial planning
  • Working knowledge of common software applications and decision support tools for MSP and ability to use provided computer technology to enhance the quality of work.
  • Experience working with / utilizing decision support tools in reference to marine spatial planning.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex or multiple projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
  • Experience establishing relationships with and collaborating with outside partners, state/local/federal agencies, international organizations and the academic community.
  • Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English; additional proficiency in other languages a plus (Spanish in particular).

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
  • The MSP Scientist is expected to travel up to 40% of the time.
