Transmission and Distribution (T&D) - Substation Designer


The Energy business line addresses the complete spectrum of energy challenges, including power generation, transmission and distribution, clean and renewable energy, energy efficiency and carbon management, hydropower and dams, thermal, geothermal, solar, and wind. We are a world leader for providing environmental and engineering services for the power transmission and distribution (T&D) community. Our clients are both network owners, such as transmission and distribution utilities, and network users, such as generators, electricity consumers and rail network operators. With more than 80 years of service, we work with more than 300 power utilities in over 50 countries.


Our T&D project work includes the following:


• Transmission and distribution analysis and network planning
• Power generation systems analysis
• Substation and transmission line design
• Power system protection
• Communications
• SCADA, metering and energy management systems
• Load dispatch centers
• High voltage underground cables
• Transmission and substation sitting and land planning
• Sub-soil investigation and earthing systems
• System efficiency and loss reduction programs

We are currently seeking candidates for the position of Substation Designer in the Piscataway, NJ area, with an Associate's Degree from an accredited technical institute or equivalent certifications, and a minimum of ten (10) years relevant experience.

The Substation Designer will perform work with Senior Designers and Engineers to modify and upgrade high voltage power substations for major electrical utility companies.  Assigned work will include supporting existing and prospective projects, and also active pursuits and proposals.  Working knowledge of major electrical utility industry principles and practices is required.

Reporting to the Design Manager or Engineering Manager, the Substation Designer will ensure compliance with established design specifications, quality, performance, safety, and code requirements.

The position entails performing a variety of tasks in support of the engineering staff, and may include assisting with engineering calculations, setting up and operating equipment, inspecting equipment and engineering installations for compliance with specifications and maintaining project documentation.  While a non-supervisory position, assignment to oversee the work of junior level technicians may be required.

General understanding of procedures and company policies is required to achieve established results and deadlines. Performs routine duties with a great deal of autonomy, and exhibits sound independent judgment in executing assigned tasks. 

The position requires solid written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Strong computer skills using programs such as MS Outlook, Word, and Excel is necessary.   Significant experience and familiarity with computerized design and drafting programs is a plus.
