Founded in 1951, the mission of The Nature Conservancy is to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends. Visit www.nature.org/aboutus to learn more. TNC POSITION SUMMARY The Critical Lands Coordinator is responsible for protecting and helping ensure the sustainable management of lands in Central and Western NY and other key geographies. S/he collaborates with a range of staff to identify priority sites, develop relationships with property owners (individuals, corporations and public entities), acquire legal interests in land and water, and create strategic objectives to ensure long term protection and/or sustainable management. In addition to pursuing standard real estate acquisition techniques, the Critical Lands Coordinator also works with public and private entities on innovative community-based and policy-oriented tools to conserve floodplains, wetlands, forests, and shorelines. Securing funding is crucial to success, and the Critical Lands Coordinator works with staff and partners to identify and secure funds for transactions, including state and federal grants, mitigation funds, and other funding sources. Initially, the position is expected to include at least 60-70% real property conservation. The balance is devoted to developing innovative partnerships and methods for leveraging protection by other entities, such as improving state and local land-use planning, assisting public agencies and private landowners on land and water management, and identifying ways to improve resiliency of shorelines and floodplains in the face of a changing climate. The Critical Lands Coordinator chairs the Chapter's Protection Committee, serves as a member of The Nature Conservancy's New York State Protection Team, and participates where necessary on the Great Lakes and Northern Appalachian whole system teams. TNC ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The Critical Lands Coordinator develops, manages and advances conservation programs, plans and methods for chapter, state and regional priorities.
