Job Description:  General Summary: The Midwest Prepared Foods & Bakery Merchandiser is responsible for operational support for Prepared Foods and Bakery Teams. This position is responsible for overseeing department merchandising standards, ensuring program execution in stores, executing category resets and supporting the Prepared Foods and Bakery Teams in the stores assigned to him/her.  The Prepared Foods and Bakery Merchandiser also works with the teams on improving operations and providing training for Team Member development.  This position is a dual report to the Prepared Foods and Bakery Coordinators. It is based in the Michigan/Indiana Metro Markets and is responsible for supporting existing and any future locations in those markets.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Drive all Prepared Foods and Bakery retail standards regarding quality, presentation, sanitation, customer service, skill building, etc.
  2. Develop schematics and strategy for effective product merchandising.
  3. Partner with A/Cs and vendor community to ensure proper implementation of programs and initiatives
  4. Act as liaison between Prepared Foods and Bakery TLs, Store Leaders and Regional Support Teams.
  5. Complete merchandising and back of house walks for assigned stores to develop / refine systems to improve productivity and consistency.
  6. Maintain awareness of competition.
  7. Improve food quality and food safety standards.
  8. Play an active part in establishing future vision of Midwest Region Prepared Foods and Bakery Teams and Programs.
  9. Spend 5 days per week in assigned metro market stores.
  10. Assist Prepared Foods and Bakery teams in new store opening process as required by the Coordinators.
  11. Participate in the mentoring, coaching, development of Prepared Foods and Bakery Team Leaders and in the development of Team Members.  Create training programs to support these initiatives.
  12. Communicate and help implement weekly regional merchandising strategies developed with the Regional Purchasing Teams.
  13. Participate in all relevant meetings with both teams, including weekly Support Team Meetings, Team Leader Conference Calls and Team Builds.
  14. Experiment and innovate to develop new merchandising techniques to drive sales.
  15. Provide feedback to the Regional Prepared Foods and Bakery Support Teams regarding product quality, program planning / execution and service to stores issues.
  16. Coordinate the successful execution of regional specials, marketing programs, holiday menus and programs as necessary.
  17. Support Prepared Foods and Bakery Teams whenever possible.
  18. Maintain a safe and sanitary department.  Report all life safety and fire hazards to the Team Leader for correction.  Comply with all occupational safety and health regulations.  Report all accidents and injuries to the Team Leader or Store Leadership immediately.
 
Must Have/Be:
  1. Minimum 2 years experience successfully leading a WFM Prepared Foods or Bakery Team or equivalent.
  2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  3. Superior merchandising skills and a good eye for detail.
  4. Computer literacy and ability to train others in the following programs: Outlook, Excel, Word, IRMA, SLIM, Store Ops, DVO and SMORE.
  5. A commitment to achieving excellence.
  6. Superior organizational skills for follow-through and the ability to juggle and prioritize.
  7. Strong work ethic, lead by example.
  8. A passion for food and a desire to be the best.
  9. Demonstrated acumen for understanding financial calculations in retail business
  10. Support from current store and regional leadership.
  11. Positive attitude, sense of humor, and a passion for WFM products.
  12. Self-motivated with a flexible schedule.
  13. Familiarity with WFM Prepared Foods and Bakery quality standards.
  14. Merchandiser lives in one of their markets and is expected to travel to the rest of the stores in their market regularly (up to 80% travel if necessary).

Education and/or Experience                           
Exceptional data entry skills.

Analytical Skills
Mathematical Skills                                         
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's.  Ability to perform these operations using units of local currency and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
 
Reasoning Ability                                            
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
 
Computer Skills                                               
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have proficiency with Windows, Word, Outlook and Excel.
 
Other Requirements
Travel
Ability to travel on a regular basis to Whole Foods Market locations within your assigned metro area.  Occasional out of town travel including overnight stays may be required.  Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights, weekends and holidays as required.

The Team Member is occasionally exposed to cold, wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts and FDA approved cleaning chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
 
Essential Job Functions:
  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Bend and stoop to grasp objects and climb ladders. Bend and twist neck and waist, reach above and below shoulders and squat.
  • Bend and lift loads, not to exceed 50 pounds.  Push and pull carts weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • Repetitive use of hands for grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
