Bechtelis designing, constructing, and commissioning the world's largest radioactive-waste treatment plant for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in southeastern Washington state. The $12.2 billion project will use vitrification technology to process and stabilize 53 million gallonsof radioactive and chemical waste currently stored at the Hanford Site which is a byproduct ofplutonium-productionduring World War II and the Cold War era.

The project is the largest undertaking of its kind ever and one of DOE's most technically challenging cleanup projects-equivalentto building two nuclear power plants. Its construction site spans 65 acres and includesfacilities for pretreatment, low-activity waste vitrification, and high-level waste vitrification, as well as an analytical laboratory.

Role Overview
Essential Duties:
  • Manage discipline work process execution and assure technical adequacy in accordance with company, contract, and industry codes and standards.
  • Provide direction to discipline work group consistent with project/program Integrated Project Team (IPT) direction.
  • Develop and revise Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and mechanical system formal calculations.
  • Coordinate closely with other technical disciplines in planning and executing work as an integrated team.
  • Support discipline design reviews to verify that requirements and expectations for design products are met.
  • Support the PEM/PE/EGS on interfaces with DOE, DNFSB, WDOH, and Ecology.
  • Complete assigned engineering tasks within budget/schedule and support identification and development of engineering trends and BCPs in discipline area.
  • Support and implement the Nuclear Safety Quality Culture in day-to-day work activities.


Basic Qualifications
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college with6 years of progressive related experience.
  • Related experience includes but is not limited to experience in Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&IDs) development and mechanical calculations related to hydraulics, equipment sizing, and overall system design for waste processing, nuclear, refinery, power, or chemical process facilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Requires extensive technical knowledge and understanding of engineering systems, engineering calculations, applications of engineering methods and materials, applications of computer software to engineering problems to ensure the design is cost effective, in accordance with applicable safety, health, environmental regulations, customer requirements and engineering codes and standards.
  • Must have working knowledge of WTP Engineering procedures.
  • Nuclear experience in working with procedures meeting quality assurance programs such as ASME-NQA-1, MIL-Q-9858A, or ISO-9000.
  • Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning and organizational skills are essential.
  • Minimum of 2 years experience on DOE Nuclear projects.
  • Must have or be capable of obtaining a U.S. Professional Engineering License not later than 31 December 2014.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug screen, physical (if located at the construction site), and background check.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Registration in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering.
  • Possess the legal right to work and remain in the US without sponsorship.
  • Knowledge of Bechtel corporate guides and standards.
