Overview Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.
Detailed Description The Estimating group's primary responsibilities involve providing disciplined estimating processes for estimate consistency and integrity across LANL programs and projects; providing assessment of cost and schedule risks associated with estimated scope; establishing and maintaining historical data for estimating metrics; and performing activities related to trending (productivity and pricing unit rates). Performs routine quantity takeoffs for multidiscipline construction activities or commodities using design drawings. The selected candidate will apply unit rates (cost and job hour) to quantities and perform portions of the total cost estimate; conduct basic material detail pricing for non-manual labor services using standard templates and prescribed functional staffing and other direct cost (ODC) input; assist in maintenance of the costs, quantities, ratios and metrics of the historical cost databases; and ensure all results, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements. The candidate must also demonstrate the ability to understand and adhere to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to cost, schedule and estimating.
Job Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Knowledge of engineering or construction.
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office/Excel/Word.
  • Demonstrated applied analytical and quantitative skills.
  • Experience preparing cost estimates with their corresponding job scopes.
  • Demonstrated experience in making decisions; researching, analyzing, and solving problems.
  • A record of working with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and meeting deadlines and commitments.
  • Strong communication skills including presentation development and report writing.

Desired Skills:
  • Experience working on multiple projects with conflicting and often changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, management, and external customers.
  • Multidiscipline construction experience or engineering degree.
  • Experience with WinEst or other relational database software.
  • Experience with RS Means.

Education:
Position typically requires a minimum of four years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Details Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a pre-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Term position: Regular-status Laboratory employees applying for term-status positions may retain regular status with approval of the cognizant Principle Associate Director.
