Summary of Role: The Senior SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Systems Engineer is responsible for the overall implementation of SunPower's world class PV power plant controls and monitoring systems. The role involves oversight and leadership on SCADA product development and requirements definition; review of technology, platforms, and systems integration; project evaluation and execution support; SCADA system design review and sub-consultant oversight; and management of special projects related to the development of SunPower's Utility and Commercial SCADA systems. Candidates must demonstrate a solid understanding of Power Systems and/or Industrial Automation control systems. Candidates will have strong design, communication, and creative problem solving skills.
The Senior SCADA Systems Engineer will report to the Manager of SunPower's SCADA Group. The SCADA Group is responsible for the end-to-end project execution for our Utility-scale and large commercial monitoring and control systems.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
- Develops and maintain design standards, templates and tools for the SCADA Systems for all systems business units - UPP International, UPP Americas, & North America Commercial
- Oversees several aspects the development, configuration, and deployment of SCADA software systems for PV power plants
- Works closely with Product Management, Product Engineering, R&D, and Sales to ensure SCADA System products are being developed to match SunPower's established standards
- Works closely with O&M and Commissioning groups to ensure the efficient and reliable delivery of fully functional and maintainable systems, as well as provide expertise for ongoing operational support
- Collaborates daily with internal and external customer(s) to determine specific project needs and requirements and to counsel within the expertise area; including group lead, engineering oversight, task management, and implementing lessons learned found during project execution.
- Conducts and/or participates in Utility and Customer facing discussions and negotiations
- Works directly with external consultants to develop detailed engineering designs, supports SCADA, Interconnection, and Telecommunication design activities and associated Systems documentation and budgetary estimates
- Provides reviews of SCADA design packages and management of sub consultants
- Reviews bid-packages, project schedules, contract documents, subcontractor and consultant selections, etc.
- Position will require some travel (less than 35%)
- Prepares and provide training for SCADA and electrical engineers on the use and implement the standards, tools and template created by this role
Minimum Requirements: Education:
- BS degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required (MS, Ph.D or P.E. preferred with an emphasis on Control and/or Communication Systems)
Required Skills :
- SCADA Systems Design Engineering with 5+ years experience
- In depth knowledge and project design experience with SCADA Systems, Substation Automation, Protection Relays, Communication Protocols, and Plant Controls
- Working knowledge of Inverter systems, inverter controls, communication and network protocols
- Working knowledge of NERC CIP and other security standards
- Knowledge of industry standard SCADA software and platforms
- Familiarity with programming languages, UI design, databases
- Familiarity with PLCs, communication systems and protocols, networking architectures
- Highly organized individuals capable of working on multiple projects simultaneously
- Working experience with utility grid operation, load flow studies, transmission planning and knowledge of feasibility, system impact and facility studies a plus
- Discrete working knowledge of applicable North America, European and Asian electrical codes (i.e. NESC, NEC, IEC)
- Discrete working knowledge of NERC, FERC, WECC standards and orders as they apply to renewable generation design and compliance
- Strong technical writing skills for the development of design standards and specifications
- Ability to collaborate as a team and act as a team leader in a group of cross functional engineers
- User knowledge with AutoCAD, Visio, Ms Office and Ms Project, Excel
Preferred Requirements: - Knowledge of electrical design, materials and methods installation, especially in power generation, is a plus
- Second language (French, Spanish, Italian) is a plus
- Wonderware System Platform a plus
- PLC Programming Experience a plus, especially Modicon family
- Firewall and Network Security experience a plus, especially JUNOS
- EIT or PE is a plus, ongoing professional development is encouraged
