Summary of Role: SunPower is seeking a Project Engineer to manage the project designs for solar projects ranging in size from small-commercial to utility-scale projects. The Project Engineer reports to the Manager of Project Engineering and will be responsible for managing engineering design services to deliver a portfolio of construction documents to support our in-house construction-project management team. The Project Engineer will coordinate with internal and external resources as needed to generate the design package.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following (other duties may be assigned):
- Oversees the preparation of detailed mechanical, electrical, civil and/or structural designs for rooftop systems and free standing ground-mounted solar arrays
- Accountable for on-time delivery of permitted set of construction drawings for optimized system design that meets all contractual requirements on multiple project designs simultaneously; Manages competing priorities and overcomes obstacles to successfully meet submittal dates
- Leads and supervises the assembled project engineering team in preparation of project deliverables, including detailed procurement and construction drawings and specifications to meet agreed upon schedule at a set budget
- Assesses and anticipates deliverables needs, reviews and edits engineering budget and schedule, and communicates resource needs to senior management.
- Represents SunPower in project team meetings covering engineering and technical issues, including meetings with the public and regulatory authorities, owners, EPC contractors, construction subcontractors, and inspectors
- Primary interface with Sr. Project Manager on matters relating to detailed engineering progress, quality, scope and schedule.
- Maintains responsible control over all design activities pertaining to the project, including engineering, quality control, and code compliance
- Uses understanding of construction logistics, site preparation, material and labor costs to ensure design optimized and value engineered to the greatest extent possible
- Supports Sr. Project Manager in updating and maintaining overall project schedule and budgets for portfolio of projects
- Is subject matter expert and used as a resource for cross-discipline SunPower employees
- Leads in defining a project's functional and spatial requirements. Estimates costs and develops schedules for the design of solar arrays.
- Schedules and leads Design Review meetings
- Creates Scopes of Work for engineering consultants and modifies and updates the boilerplate scopes as needed
- Mentors more junior engineers
- Effectively directs and utilizes administrative resources in repetitive tasks such as generating plots and updating schedules
- Stamps construction documents as needed including drawings, specifications and calculations
In general, candidates should be able to:
- Apply advanced subject matter knowledge and wide-ranging expertise to complex business issues, and is regarded as a subject matter expert
- Contribute frequently to the development of new ideas and methods and to the development of company objectives and principles
- Work on complex problems/projects where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of multiple factors
- Exercise significant independent judgment within broadly defined policies and practices to determine best method for accomplishing work and achieving objectives
- Create formal networks involving coordination among groups
- Frequently represent the organization to external customers/clients
- Provide leadership as a group or team leader as necessary
Minimum Requirements: - A Bachelors degree in Civil, Electrical, or Structural Engineering OR a Masters degree in Architecture
- 6+ years project engineering experience in the design/build, EPC or utility electricity generation field
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in electrical, civil, or structural engineering.
- Demonstrated civil, electrical, or structural design skills
- Thorough understanding of electrical design, materials and methods of installation, especially in power generation
- Strong AutoCAD and ability to generate accurate, highly-detailed construction drawings
- Strong analytical skills
- Well-developed and professional interpersonal skills; ability to interact effectively with people at all levels of the organization, as well as outside customers and vendors
- Ability to work in a team environment with a customer service focus
- Excellent organizational skills to manage time well, prioritize effectively, and handle multiple deadlines
- Extremely strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to delegate and prioritize work of drafters, technicians, and interns
- Strong familiarity with construction and electrical codes
- Ability to successfully procure, monitor, and assess subcontracted consultants
- Ongoing professional development is expected
Preferred Requirements: - Construction experience in the solar PV industry
- Familiarity with construction costs, schedules, and WBS project accounting
- Diverse regional expertise in permitting and interconnection requirements for small and large scale PV projects
OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION
- This position is based in Richmond, CA
- Occasional travel (visiting project sites, etc.)
- Limited relocation assistance will be provided to the selected candidate
